Granted, LeCunn was quite sloppy with his neuroscience metaphor/example. But I think this is the first time I’ve seen a “go read my fanfic” as a response in debate. wild.

I’m not going to be fooled into reading the context of this, but please, don’t make the moderators go acausal on people taking things “seriously”, not realizing they were abortive and cringe-inducing attempts at humor (even if they have a “haha jk unless” feel to them). Sneer at it for being a bad, nightmare-fuelling joke rather than making us look bad.

If I were in it for the cult members, I would not cite "D&D BDSM fanfic" in public. There's no way that isn't the breaking point for *someone*. A smart grifter in Yud's situation would not confess to being a walking stereotype about Tumblr when he was getting platformed by TIME.

We do get that this is a joke, right? Like, it’s a bad joke, it isn’t making any real underlying point, it doesn’t make Yud look good, he takes his own fanfic seriously enough to the point where this is almost believable, and these guys use ‘jokes’ to shield their real beliefs often enough that I don’t really blame anyone for taking this at face value, but,

It’s a “joke” but Eliezer has said too many things on the border of Poe’s law for anyone not to at least consider that he might be serious. And it is seriously intended to popularize his fanfic (in hopes of replicating HPMOR success?).

I think he’s trying to force a repeat of his “success” with HPMOR, not appreciating that Harry Potter is much more accessible and (relatively) less cringey. And the even HPMOR was mostly useful as a recruiting tool, not a replacement for detailed write ups (classic Yud was at least willing to write up the sequences even if he gave up on peer review after a single failure).

I think you’re actually giving him too much credit! I think it was like, a hundred pages in or so, he realized he was enjoying writing it and was not being overwhelmed by ~~laziness~~ akrasia so he decided to multitask and started padding out and elaborating in-character lectures to cover topics he’d meant to write sequences about but never gotten around to before. Unfortunately for the purposes of public education, the first BDSM scene was already written by then, and was heavily tied into the overall plot (with setup for more BDSM scenes), so he couldn’t easily make it suitable for mass consumption. Instead he just edited the BDSM scene into a linked side thread, and made the additional BDSM scenes side threads, in a half-assed effort to make it more acceptable to share and spread. Having finished the story, and mistaking length/time spent writing for quality, he decides it ought to be the next HPMOR, with little regard for why it won’t…

The sweet part is that Yud is most essentially a sci-fi dork who managed to bootstrap his imagination onto reality.

Now what would normally be cliched and cringy sci-fi concerns have been memed into real world worry. He just doesn’t understand the niche he’s exploited. It’s all super apparent from his worry about a computer AGI flipping a transistor the ‘hack’ the cheat codes of reality to use magic.

Nanotechnology, magic, AGI. It’s just science fiction, nothing more, nothing less.

I know! I will make a reverse gatekeeping joke, to highlight how much expecting ME to read is in bad faith, I need content that is hard to engage in good faith (only true 4chan dwellers can survive the cringe) for novice outsiders. Admitting to having written a 1.8M word BDSM super rational fanfic might be a bit cringe inducing and make it hard for outsiders to take me seriously, but the sick burn is totally worth it.

With a bit of luck I get to call them hypocrites, and the memetic warfare cringe inflicts a mortal psychic wound upon my enemies.
