Yud claims he’s weird because his higher than average general intelligence (https://twitter.com/esyudkowsky/status/1656293137898192896?s=46&t=Jh6AFED-yfbLv5W34trf7g)

God Paul Graham is a gullible idiot

"I actually worry a lot that as I get "popular" I'll be able to get away with saying stupider stuff than I would have dared say before. This sort of thing happens to a lot of people, and I would *really* like to avoid it" - Paul Graham (http://lemonodor.com/archives/001091.html#c8508)
Narrator: He did not.

I have no shame, and I must tweet.

Crucial to his grift to go around talking about how smart he is all the time, his followers are always like “damn this guy’s so smart, I better ‘update my priors’ to give a higher probability to his takes”

writing "i am above avg intelligence" on the chalkboard like a simpsons intro until i am the most highly regarded rationalist
It also always seems that a lot of his "weirdness" is part of his LARP. If you look at the cultists they are always like "this guy really knows his AI stuff, but sucks at people stuff". Even though if you go by quantifiable achievements the guy really doesn't know jack shit about AI and can at most do third hand popularizations, but has actually succeeded at convincing quite moneyed people that he knows something about AI, which is a social success, not a technical one. There's plenty of people who don't do fedoras nor tilleys, and to bullshit their way into a topic they had to get their doctorates and author their papers. That pattern suggests the possibility that it is actually important for him to use props like a fedora or a tilly.
I agree with this, but also have to note that it looks like Yud's had some coaching when it comes to public speaking, based on the video in the Tweet.
Yeah, the optimum amount of LARP as a tech guy bad at public speaking vs the drawbacks of being bad at public speaking, got to shift depending on the audience. Then also there's a weird interplay between his being genuinely spooked by chatgpt etc, and his having spend his whole life grifting and having suffered complete atrophy of any mental muscle needed for actually thinking through what would he need to do if he was genuinely worried about AI.

Having less than general intelligence always makes you weird;
it means you can’t adapt to a broader range of ideas

Is there a meaningful distinction being made between “intelligence” and “general intelligence” or is that just him being “weird”?

Feels like exactly his kind of idiocy to pretend that “intelligence” gets magically less murky of a concept by simply appending a “general” to it.

> Is there a meaningful distinction being made between "intelligence" and "general intelligence" or is that just him being "weird"? You can't rationalize your engineer's syndrome without pretending that being good at standardized tests means that you're good at everything. Hence "general." (As an added bonus it lets you believe that certain races are smarter than others.)
> means that you're good at everything Except being socially competent, apparently. There's this bizarre doubletalk here that boils down to "I'm better at everything than you, and that's why I suck at being personable and persuasive."
It all makes sense if you imagine what belief would let them feel most superior to others.
*tips fedora*
He's LARPing the engineer syndrome, though. He's a fanfic writer with forays into writing third-hand scientific popularizations.
He’s so used to throwing around the term “general” in conjunction with AI to distinguish how the AGI is an existential threat even though computers are already smarter than humans at chess or crunching numbers or a variety of tasks. So even talking about human intelligence he feels compelled to add the word in.
You can't [hate on Stephen Jay Gould](https://www.reddit.com/r/SneerClub/comments/qew0bk/turns_out_paul_was_right_ea_needs_idea_people_to/) and earn your [Thielbux](https://www.reddit.com/r/SneerClub/comments/4ixwgl/yudkowsky_on_thiel_being_a_ca_delegate_for_trump/) if you don't promote the idea that "general intelligence" means something.
What is the obsession with the very ancient and secret rite in detestation of Gould, lol? Must be envy.

This is like 90s junior high girls bragging about how “random” they are.

The scenario he’s thought up in the OP there makes me think he just played Plague Inc. for the first time.

No yud you’re just autistic, same as every computer nerd

Isn’t that the elephant in the room with all these rationalist? And why they are missing a huge part of this AI issue? It appears that many of them are on the spectrum and they have a major weakness when it comes to the whole Theory of Mind?
I mean I'm autistic, but I'm not a moron. I think these people are just the right kind of stupid.
My Autistic friends and family describe how frustrating it is to live in a world set up by and for Neurotypicals: They say there are all of these secret rules that everyone knows but won't tell them about and gets mad at them for not following. Rationalists say that this is true. There are a whole bunch of secret rules, and the secret rules are stupid, and you should stop following them. And then they offer you an entirely different set of secret rules, which will unlock an entirely different world set up by and for Rationalists. So it's a cult engineered to take in people, by first affirming and naming a real struggle that they have, and then offering them power. People with Autism are prone to thinking rigidly in groupings and classifications, the way young people do before the prefrontal cortex is fully up and running. That's one of the quirks of Autism: you can be of above average intelligence and still have those zones of development that aren't functioning correctly. It may lead to a prescriptivist vision for life, a hierarchical concept of societal roles and worth, and makes you susceptible to buying into all kinds of bigotry, if you fall in with the wrong gurus. Just like cult leaders target young people who are still seeking to unlock the secrets of the universe, Rationalists offer those secrets to people with Autism. This happened to my mom, who is Autistic and who fell in with the Dr. Dobson, Focus on the Family types. They told her how the world works, what the order is, what her role in it was, and how she should then treat other people. They coached her on being a physically abusive parent. There was a methodology and a philosophy and an explanation for why you should disregard the emotions that tell you "What I'm doing is wrong and the people I'm doing it to are suffering." So people with Autism aren't naturally misogynistic, aren't naturally believers in racial supremacism, aren't naturally likely to ignore the needs of the people right in front of them because the people right in front of them are irrelevant in the scope of the whole. Autism doesn't make you like that. But when you come across a whole bunch of people who have answers to the questions you've been asking, and who teach you how to think in exciting new ways which, they promise, will bring order to everything-- A group of people who scoff at gender conformity while simultaneously promoting rigid concepts about gender, and dismissing women outside of their group as emotional and therefore irrational-- A group of people who celebrate Autism as a more-evolved way of being human and who despise social conventions, including the social conventions that the weak are to be protected and the cruel are to be discouraged-- You can turn benign people into something malignant, and there will be a disproportionately-large percentage of that group that is Autistic, both because that's how you've branded your group, AND because the group message, about unlocking a few perfect formulas to thinking liberated from feeling, is most likely to send up warning signals in people who are NOT Autistic.

Sane AI doomer: How will the world’s richest people leverage AI to accumulate and secure more power and wealth?

PG: No, don’t worry about that! What you really need to worry about is if the plot to M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening happens in real life.

Yud’s inability to figure out that remarks like these are hurting his cause are actively showing that higher intelligence is not a superpower and you shouldn’t be worried of an AGI convincing people to launch the missiles filled with diamandoid superbacteria which will kill all humans at the exact same time.

Good lord he’s just like every weirdo that wants to debate you on “traditional values” on twitter who thinks that being offputting is not due to their unwillingness to self-reflect but them being big brains

I think he might articulate that thought differently if he realized he’s on the spectrum.

EDIT: I should point out that I don’t mean that as an insult or a shot against Yud. I’m on the spectrum my son is, my brother and father are. The hyper-obsession with fiction he read at a formative age, and his inability to conform to the mainstream because he doesn’t understand it but copes by saying He understands it and rejects it, the difficulty staying inside the lines of what’s considered socially acceptable to talk about are things that are very, very familiar to me.

If he had an awareness/acceptance of himself that extended to his autism, he might see how much those factors contribute to being ”weird,” and not just because he sees himself as history’s special little guy.

So smart, yet can't figure that out... tsk tsk

Yeah… that’s the reason…

I really wonder how I ended up blocked by him, because I would really like to insult him enough to get blocked and remember it.

I think that he misspelled the word “lower”. 🤔
