I feel like the forum-type thread/comment structure works well for sneerclub but I'm not sure what other alternatives are out there for that kind of content...
I guess there are the federated reddit alternatives, but the fediverse model seems ill-suited for Reddit-type communities imo (feels like things should be grouped by topic, not grouped into random servers that all host every topic). And then there's always self-hosting the old fashioned way, but that feels like overkill for something of this scale, lol
> feels like things should be grouped by topic, not grouped into random servers that all host every topic
There's nothing about fediverse that forces anyone to do that; specialized instances have already started to pop up. (ok, when the purity police and "I'll defederate you because you federate with X" gets to Lemmy, then specialized instances might get in trouble, and big bags of everything like Beehaw might be vindicated).
You know this line of inquiry is entirely hypothetical cuz who TF with a life is keeping up with high school level niche website drama of that caliber. Lol.
All these front ends also look completely generic unappealing and unattractive. Nope!
these are all old and were basically obsoleted by sneerclub

Most terrifying part of getting near term older tbh but I refuse to use a standing desk so its either that or renounce evil computer touching arts by 30.
I’d be willing to build one- maybe call it lesslesswrong or
something. A simple forum type website dedicated to this kind of
discussion is exactly the type of thing I’d love to waste a couple
weekends making quick.
Disroot Cloud has a
slack/discord clone buried within it.
You can invite users to conversations as guests, so theoretically one
or a few people could set it up as mods and invite everyone else as a
guest.
One nice thing about disroot is that it’s all open source and run by
volunteers – while it might be arbitrarily shut down one day, it won’t
be for shitty monetization reasons.
EDIT: I’ve set up an example room here:

This looks interesting, but they don't seem to be allowing new sign-ups (or if they are, I'm not seeing it). Is this the kind of thing where you could send me an invite?
You can sign up at https://disroot.org . It takes them a few days to approve your application though.
Also if you find yourself using the service send them some cash
there appears to be nothing as yet
there isn’t even a current SomethingAwful thread
(there’s a discord, but it’s really not up to going public)
what would be suitable?
what if we hung out in a basement, got really high, and sang along to garth brooks
