It's that centerlord, pundit class, rational-by-default, self-appointed arbiter of what and who is reasonable, faux contrarian, corralling in the left-right hordes sort of pose they sway around with self-evidently earned gravitas that I don't think you can get away with so easily in 2018. Despite a few blips of hope (Peterson) their reactionary swing back feels more like the 39 year old posting memes shitting on "today's music" in an failing attempt to reassert generation dominance than any kind of real gravitas.

Instead of the average 1950s bigot, they’re the average 50s bigoted academic.

Good sneer!

I figured he was talking about how they view themselves and what they claim, not their true beliefs. In the first case, they see themselves like “true” academics, untainted by postmodernism and the social sciences. In the second, they claim to abhor racists and white supremacists, and call themselves race realists, which of course means white supremacists.

> stemlords Please don't. There are enough idiots that think technology optimism and progressive values are somehow in conflict without the rest of us buying in to that narrative.
Yeah, not a fan of any of the terms that have been proposed so far. Not that the names of things matter to their substance, but marketing is a real concern. I have heard “centerlords” to mean roughly this, but I think that name might be too sarcastic for widespread use. I kind of doubt “grey tribers” will catch on. And “alt-lib” just doesn’t do it for me. I once called Peterson “undercover alt-right” because I just don’t see a meaningful distinction when it comes to these people’s policy preferences or anti-reality modus operandi. But that phrase did *not* go over well in that conversation...

I assume [this one](https://twitter.com/OmanReagan/status/966782450075557888)- it was hidden under the break.
