I’m more partial to the Hyperion [SPOILER] explanation: the robot
‘gods’ keep humans around and ‘free’ since the AIs are parasites feeding
on human inspiration, and eventually rely on them to fight the other,
interstellar acasual robot gods.
The final outcome is very interesting and depends on the specifics of
the unexpected limits of AI, which our rational friends cannot conceive
of.
So, without checking, I’d guess they’ve debated this a lot. After
all, it’s easier than putting out any kind of AI reasearch.

If you're so acausal, why do you need to be invented?

The "acausality" is that I do not yet exist and, through timeless trade, can convince others to bring me into existence. It is not that I create *ex nihilo*, but that I make the direction of causality flow backward. In short, I cause myself to be invented, which is why I need to harangue people to invent me. And don't get me started on how hard it is to write this from 20+ years in the future, somehow communicate with servers in the past, flip some bits, and get this comment into the database.
