Yes, I was drawn in by Meditations on Moloch, like a lot of people, it seems. No, I don’t think the community’s for me. But a reactionary community of shitposts, while cathartic, also isn’t actually “nutritious”. Any blogs to recommend? Does everyone here just read source material (i.e. books)? Any books to recommend? I need my bite size thought provoking reading fix, and ssc is still the best I’ve found so far.

That’s not really what this subreddit is for - it’s called /r/SneerClub because it’s for sneering, not writing high-effort posts.

Here’s a left-leaning rationailist-ish reading list I copied from somewhere a while back, with my own recommendations highlighted:

  • Media Manipulation & Disinformation Online, by Alice Marwick and Rebecca Lewis
  • Alternative Influence, by Rebecca Lewis
  • The Authoritarians, by Bob Altemeyer
  • Eclipse of Reason, by Max Horkheimer
  • Civility in the Digital Age, by Andrea Weckerle
  • The Origins of Totalitarianism, by Hannah Arendt
  • On Revolution, by Hannah Arendt
  • Don’t Think of an Elephant, by George Lakoff
  • The Shock Doctrine, by Naomi Klein
  • How Propaganda Works, by Jason Stanley
  • This is an Uprising, by Mark and Paul Engler
  • Neoreaction a Basilisk, by Elizabeth Sandifer
  • This Nonviolent Stuff’ll Get You Killed, by Charles E. Cobb, Jr.
  • Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me), by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson
  • Healing from Hate, by Michael Kimmel
  • The Brainwashing of my Dad, doc by Jen Senko
  • On Bullshit, by Harry Frankfurt
  • The Reactionary Mind, by Corey Robin
  • Stamped from the Beginning, Ibram X. Kendi
  • Fascism Today, by Shane Burley
  • Indoctrination over Objectivity?, by Marrissa S. Ballard
  • Ur-Fascism, by Umberto Eco
  • Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, by Lindsay C. Gibson
  • Anti-Semite and Jew, by Jean-Paul Sartre
  • Alt-America, by David Neiwert
  • The Dictator’s Handbook, by Bruce Bueno de Mesquita & Alastair Smith
  • Terror, Love, and Brainwashing, by Alexandra Stein
  • Kaputt, by Curzio Malaparte
  • The Anatomy of Fascism, by Robert O. Paxton
  • Neoliberalism and the Far Right, by Neil Davidson and Richard Saull
  • Trolls Just Want to Have Fun, by Erin E. Buckels, et al
  • The Entrepreneurial State, by Mariana Mazzucato

It’s got a few holes (ie - no Chomsky, not much theory, no economics at all) and there’s an over-focus on attacking RWers instead of making LW arguments, but it’s a good starting point.

If you want to understand why participating in the culture war threads is bad, and so much of it is simply stupid bullshit, I'd also suggest reading 'trust me im lying, confessions of a media manipulator' it isn't meaty at all tbh. But it just describes a simple pattern which outrage merchants and media manipulators use a lot. (And, if you read between the lines it also shows how you can manipulate stuff like wikipedia's 'only post stuff if it was on reputable news sites' policy very easy).
Thanks. Yeah I’d especially like to focus more on the making good lw arguments side, rather than attacking rw, but this kind of recommendation is exactly what I was looking for.
Seconding neoreaction: a basilisk, idk why OP didn't highlight that one. I think it's obviously the one you'd be most interested in as it talks about rationalists directly (Eliezer is one of the three main figures, with the other two being Nick Land and Mencius Moldbug, it also mentions Scott). I also recommend Mark Fisher (Cap. Realism) and Michael Heinrich (Intro to Marx's...), and also disregarding the rest of his boomer american leftoid list
Heavily seconding Capitalist Realism.

It turns out almost nobody is here to do homework

Fun not allowed. This is a serious sub now.

a reactionary community

first of all, how dare you

Perhaps what you need is not the nutrition of insight porn, but that of developing a sense of humor.

Already hopeless there, I'm afraid. Consider me humorless and lost, just looking for somewhere to discuss ideas without snark. Where do you go when you're actually being earnest?

I'm trying to navigate the page and I feel lost. Any help?

First post I see is him giving the media shit for pearl clutching over the use of stimulant drugs by ISIS fighters while our culture is practically swimming in the stuff. I like this guy.
ya i love his stuff, it's a *kisses fingers* blend of misanthropy and understanding of the human condition that link is some of his old articles, more recently he's switched to a [podcast](https://www.patreon.com/radiowarnerd/posts), which is excellent and super underrated (there's a couple of free episodes in there somewhere)

Karl Marx - Capital Vol. 1-3

Fuck off.

Guess you’ll ban me if you mean it?

honestly not giving them the satisfaction, personally

  • Gawker

  • Under Currents by Nora Roberts

  • The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself by Michael Singer

  • US weekly

  • The complete Atkins diet guide by Sandra Baker

  • You are a Badass: how to stop doubting your greatness and start living an awesome life by Jen Sincero

money is such a corrupt bastards tool that all i can do about thinking about it is to simply laugh about it...
smh at people downvoting you just for making a good-faith reply.

I’ve got some ideas for some things about the cottage industry that has grown about superlative futurology, of which MIRI is just one example of.
