To head off any other posts coming down the line: whoever you are coming to ask about, if you are coming to a place called “sneer club” to check to see if the folks there really think poorly of the people who cape for eugenics or phrenology or whatever. And you have to qualify your comment with “I saw the comment where they said evo-psych justifies sexism but…” just stop yourself from asking ahead of time? Go check rational wiki or whatever and see what people will dunk on you for ahead of time? That way you don’t have to delete your own post after everyone says “yes”

but what if we STEEL MAN the eugenics

What if the racists were the good guys all along? Ever thought of that, leftists?
A silent gentle eugenics.
Haha, I’m mostly super-offended by the dismissiveness/willful ignorance of this sub, but I browse it pretty often, cuz: 1.) It feels important to “Steelman” even willful ignorance? 2.) Obviously, autistic people are *who you’re supposed to make fun of* 3.) Every now and then, there are some pretty good sneers here, like this one, that feel like they cut me in on some of that good smug, self-satisfied action. You done good, carry on!

It's certainly not a Get Out of Nuremburg Free card.
I don’t read everything here so maybe I’ve missed something. But i don’t recall people in this sub attacking people for being autistic. Is your point 2 that in fact some of the people whose eugenics we mock are in fact autistic even though we don’t know that, and that because of that they should not be mocked for holding truly abhorrent views that are specifically associated with people (ie the historical Nazis) who might well include people with autism among those they would eradicate if they could have their way?
One time my family was at a trampoline park, and a kid who was 7 or 8 years old started zinging dodgeballs at my 2 year old, continuing to pummel my small child after several calm pleas to stop. The kid's mom was no where to be seen, and I had just read an article suggesting that it would damage my boy to let other people run over him in my presence. So, I did what any red-blooded American man would do and Tom Brady'ed that kid into next Tuesday. Wife goes to find Attacker-mom, who was having a mommy-meeting about rich people stuff around the corner with half-a-dozen other moms. Attacker-mommy hears Wife's pleas and immediately beings shouting "You can't do that, he has autism!" IDK what we're supposed to do in these situations. ^^^^/humor PS: Add 15 years to the ages of the children and you get today's just-graduated-from-college cult members and the nerdy-kids-still-in-high-school potential recruits, resulting in this foolishness right here.
No, I’m saying that the rationalist blogosphere, where many of the participants are openly on the autism spectrum, has problems of a classically autistic flavor. For instance, eugenics *can* make sense *on paper*, which was why it was popular among progressives before the Nazis demonstrated how deeply dark the bottom of the slippery slope can be. Dismissing eugenics out of hand, as an argument from social consensus, is like an anti-autistic safeguard of decency. Steelmanning eugenics, then, is a slippery slope, leaving society vulnerable to racist, bad-faith arguments that can lead to, idk, the Holocaust. How wrong am I in characterizing an inability to *feel* this truth as what this sub is effectively sneering at, as opposed to “rationalizing” that “prevention of common genetic disorders (what the entire profession of genetic counseling does) justifies a eugenic perspective”?
I’ve noticed that rationalists seem to treat good/bad-faith as points on their moral compass instead of acknowledging simple truths like “eugenics is wrong”
> eugenics can make sense on paper Except that *it doesn't*.
Yeah, the basic science falls the fuck apart super fast. Eugenics has its own weird fucked up internal logic, and its gross proponents mistake that for it actually making sense. Bleh.
>No, I’m saying that the rationalist blogosphere, where many of the participants are openly on the autism spectrum, has problems of a classically autistic flavor. [Hmmm.](https://www.reddit.com/r/SneerClub/comments/kmr4gf/how_lesswrong_preys_on_young_nerdyautistic_men/) Your characterization of SC as anti-autistic is wrong. Moreover, your characterization of the rationalist blogosphere as having problems brought about by too many people on the autism spectrum is backasswards. Rationalists have a eugenics/HBD problem. This is endemic to rationalism. Rationalists also prey upon (young, nerdy) autistic people, and then warp their worldview once they take the hook.
One of the things I like and appreciate about the SC community is that I can close this app for a few hours without replying to something and find several others here have said what I would have said only better, for which I thank everyone above
