Figured this would be the best place to get the straight dope.

I do wonder, if TheMotte is banned, whether it might induce a modest
backlash against Reddit, akin to what the NYT got from its Scott-doxing
article. (Not enough to really hurt it, but a material loss of respect
from some prominent Paul Graham-esque figures).
they talk about
> I would still support a ban on the Contentious Issue to keep this sub alive as long as possible
which I'm first assuming means scientific racism, but are there any other candidates?
They certainly seem convinced it's trans stuff. I personally would assume it's carrying water for the people who tried to overthrow the government, but they have every terrible opinion it is possible to have (it will never cease to amaze me that there are unironic *monarchists* there), so it's really anyone's guess.
My *intuitive* money is still on either vague or specific plans/statements of intent to do something illegal in a fashion that could be traced to the sub (e.g. not “I’m buying drugs” but “somebody here should buy us drugs”). Other candidates would be not scientific racism *per se* but scientific racism that could get reddit in trouble. To be honest though I really want it to be “stop using threats and slurs, even just heavily implied threats and slurs, assholes”; in which case it would be open racism and as otherwise noted trans people.
Some highlights for me are:
- floating the idea of being saved by Elon buying up reddit so they can
keep discussing “HBD”
- One of the mods gently reminding someone that they don’t want totally
free speech, just free speech enough for HBD
One of the weirdest rightwing things in my mind is that they think they can get some sort of personal connection with celebs. See here them going for Elon Musk, but see also the various weirdos screaming at their facebook livestream of them evading the cops in pursuit for daddy Trump to save him, or somebody like Sargon of a, trying to make Trump say gamergate. Like they care about some dumb flamewar like shit which doesn't even involve them.
Random poster just assumes the head mod can contact Elon, and the head mod also just assumes they're right:
>I have not-entirely-jokingly thought of that exact thing; I assume I'm two connections away from him at most, maybe even one.
>I have no idea what those connections are though and I think the guy's a bit busy with Twitter.
It will be fun if they eventually get musks support (the only way I see this happening is via 'themotte gets axed, scott writes some pro themotte post, and musk reads this while he is 'working 80 hours a week' and tweets about the new themotte place' which will have themotters go 'wow these muskites are weird nerds' and the muskites will go 'wow these themotters are racist nerds'. And then both groups of them will complain about the influx of bad cryptocurrency spambots pretending to be musk.
And they will find a way to blame sneerclub for all of this. (And to any themotters reading this, you need to stop visiting that subreddit, it literally rots your mind, remember how you arrived at rationality to become more rational and how you are angry at culture war stuff now all the time? This isn't normal)
>working 80 hours a week
He’s the same guy that thinks buying Tesla stock is philanthropy so his idea of work probably includes eating and sleeping and tweeting.
I wish for you to know that I read "themotters" as ["them otters"](https://i.natgeofe.com/n/b29c7fe7-4ae8-48ed-a23f-8d9eb7711c00/eurasian-river-ottter-1528265_4x3.jpg).
That is all.
Musk better start watching out, being two connections away from random people they'd never personally met was enough to get a whole "hit list" compiled about the Clintons and all the people they massacred.
>the various weirdos screaming at their facebook livestream of them evading the cops in pursuit for daddy Trump to save him
That guy was hilarious. Not so great that he put his family's lives at risk, though.
> - floating the idea of being saved by Elon buying up reddit so they can keep discussing "HBD"
Thanks for doing the hard work of finding the gold for us in TheMotte's racism mines.
Maybe the best case scenario is ending up like that New Zealand Bird
Farms site, which somehow manages to self-sustain, but substituting
culture war for internet personalities.
Still baffling how the fuck said site is still up after so long, on that note
Has to rank up there on the list of most blatantly evil parts of the internet
I think it's because organizing harassment is evil but hard to prosecute / shut down when the people doing it control the site themselves. Plus the people they target usually don't have much in the way of resources to go after them legally or even privilege to go to authority.
Their host will never take them down. It was explicitly founded for free speech trash like this, IIRC.
>Has to rank up there on the list of most blatantly evil parts of the internet
Which is crazy because it was barely tolerable a few years ago. Now every thread is t-slur this and k-slur that. The radicalization came quick and hard.
How will it be implement? I don’t really know. Perhaps an offsite
hosted dictionary for common terms and phrases, heavy use for acronyms,
use of scientific and academic terms ONLY– For example; HBD discussions
can be had without using the American terms to describe the groups being
discussed, and opting for the scientific term.
Yeah, the (more obvious) racists already tried that with the stupid
Frenworld and air conditioner repair subreddits and it didn’t work. But
hey, you managed to find a faux-intellectual way of saying “what if we
just use a secret code”!
But the admins are stupid low IQ sjws, they will never see through our clever ploy to call all black people 'googles'. (Yes, racists tried this, and yes it is really obvious when they do).
lol AT them going ‘just set up a replacement site it is easy, don’t
get why nobody has done it already’.
Perhaps, you know, it isn’t as easy as people think. Perhaps when a
site scales to large sizes everything (for example proper rules
enforcement) becomes a huge problem.
(E: On the subject at hand, I don’t know what is going on btw, as I
don’t follow themotte. I sometimes check it when it comes up here and
always go ‘yeah that place sucks’ but that is my involvement in the
place).
E: Also going from the whole discussions there, where they think it
is just transphobia/racism/leftwing admins who will get you banned just
goes to show that they just missed the viral tweet of one of the former
founders (I think) of reddit who explained why stuff gets banned and how
large scale moderation work. For a group of self proclaimed truthseekers
they really suck at it.
E: haha, went back to the tread a day later to see if any more crazy
stuff popped up. Somebody is suggesting keeping a private list of all
‘anti-enlightenment tankie takes’ on a private website and show that to
the world when they get banned in some sort of revenge act. They really
think the reddit admins are leftwing tankies or something.
These guys are such fucking pissants. Apparently this was
foreseen:
I think we all expected this would happen eventually
…but it’s just a total mystery why the admins would do such
a thing to their innocent community:
what topics are those?
We don’t know, frankly. The admins didn’t say.
It’s cool, though, because despite the total mystery of why
the admins would do such a thing, they’ve got a ready comparison on
hand:
Worst-case, we had a good run, y’know? Someone will reproduce it
somewhere […] I’m not really worried about all of online getting
censored anytime soon. Hell, Stormfront is still up.
It really is telling on themselves that their go-to comparison is Stormfront. It's not illegal to have Stormfront, it just makes you an asshole. If you want to make the point about stuff staying up, your example should be torrent sites, which are black-letter illegal and maintain an uptime that's comparable to reddit. But, of course, they know that they are exactly the people they claim they aren't, so obviously they use the examples they do.
I’m curious now, how did most people find the Motte in the first
place?
Naruto fanfiction → Harry Potter fanfiction → list of recommended
Harry Potter stories on TV Tropes → HPMoR → Yudkowsky’s Facebook page →
Slate Star Codex
Option 3 is that we move to someone else’s hosted server. I’m not
going to name those servers here because Reddit has a tendency to
siteban mentions of alternatives to Reddit and yes I realize this is
fucked-up.
If Reddit thinks that the content in question is against its content
policy, why would they then allow just linking to it or directing people
to it on its platform? Nothing fucked up about their behavior here at
all.
(also, I’ve never heard of anyone getting banned from mentioning
sites like Voat, or certainly no one has been in trouble for discussing
actual Reddit alternatives like Twitter or Facebook).
> (also, I've never heard of anyone getting banned from mentioning sites like Voat, or certainly no one has been in trouble for discussing actual Reddit alternatives like Twitter or Facebook).
I assume by alternatives, they mean sites like Gab and Stormfront-esque sites.
Sure, my point is that they're not exactly banning these mentions just because they're "Reddit alternatives" (and hey, you didn't even get banned for mentioning Gab or Stormfront, so I'm a bit skeptical about how pronounced this "tendency for sitebans" even is).
> (also, I've never heard of anyone getting banned from mentioning sites like , or certainly no one has been in trouble for discussing actual Reddit alternatives like or ).
Lol, was that intentional?
Huh what? I mentioned two well-known social media sites, one with a blue bird as its logo and one with a blue F. Not sure if you're filtering mentions of those sites out yourself but I can see the text when signed out so I assume this isn't being done on the Reddit side.
Yikes, and this is the cancel culture stuff we should be worried about. I can still see the post btw. Nor did I get a warning message or anything.
E: assuming you are not fucking with me of course.
nope, not fucking with you at all. I’ve got a red banner with your whole comment in it and a “[removed]” note, then if I click the “approve” button it goes in and stays there but doesn’t do anything, just like on your old computer monitor when grime got inside the switch
Amazing to watch them look after their own, isn’t it?
Sorry, I replied to your post 9 days ago but the reddit admins deleted my message. (Shadow deleted it, so I can still see it, but you cannot)
Here is my reaction, minus the bad url.
> Dont worry about it, had enough weird shit like this happen that it could have been real. Try tweeting [redacted] for example.

I have no doubt this is Ellen Pao’s doing.
Just waiting to see how, or if, Scoot addresses this.

Context: that would rule and it should be, preferably the former.
