The issue is that Mormonism means you can’t do fun things like cocaine and alcohol. And like many reactionaries they want their cake and to eat it too.
Also, mainstream Mormonism has explicitly rejected polyamory. To get that you’ve gotta join one of those really weird sub-sects and live in like, shithole Arizona. Not fun.
The whole “converts and people interested in a conservative religion they weren’t born into are way more extreme than native born adherents” kinda seems like a pretty common problem. Consider also the catholic converts like Douhat and Rod Dreher who seem to think that the church should go back to the inquisition, and spend a huge amount of effort whining about how the pope is wrong. Like, why are these freaks so invested in religions that they think are totally on the wrong track and have been for centuries?
Side note: Dreher falls well outside the scope of this sub, but he’s well past “totally sneer worthy” and deep into “genuinely pathetic” territory. Nobody has ever been more divorced than that man.
I think that the strong community aspect of trad religions is what these people are desperately craving.
The fact that many are atomized and alienated is correctly identified as a huge problem. Mormons have figured out a way to have community and capitalism too, which I'm sure is appealing to those unwilling to blame capitalism for the near destruction of the very concept of community.
Fundies also tend to be accepting of people regardless of their ability to fit in in general society, which I'm sure is purely coincidental.
Dreher is also not Catholic anymore FWIW. He found it too liberal and jumped to the eastern orthodox Church, which is perhaps the funniest trajectory a born again tradcath type can have.
I absolutely agree with the idea of him being beyond sneer though. He's a clearly detestable person. And yet the most distinct feeling I get when I hear about him is pity.
As a poly person, I've never really had the impression the public opinion had risen above this kind of sex cult shit to begin with, tbh

A few times I've thought about musing that, given how weird and annoying EA thinkers are - and knowing about the overlap between all the sneerable communities - there has to be some HBD bullshit *somehow* wrapped up in the FTX collapse, even if it's tangential to the actual Ponzi scheme, but didn't because I didn't have any sources to point to.
