Wait, are they implying that SBF isn’t a nerd? Like him or not,
anyone who goes to a math summer camp in high school is a bona fide,
capital-N Nerd. It’s so difficult for them to accept that their in-group
could produce someone like SBF that they can only believe that he was
never in the in-group to begin with.
Yes, he is now being unpersonned. He is also out of the lw roleplay group. And no longer welcome to play league of legends with them. (Joke aside he did play league but people were already claiming that him being bad at it made him a faker or something. Gatekeeping among nerds...)
It’s almost certainly a last ditch effort to cast SBF out of the group in order to save face. But it’s also worth noting that for some of the more toxic subcultures of nerdom, the idea that someone can do a thing a lot and still suck at it is a very tough pill for them to swallow.
Yeah, I meant my remark as 'this sucks so much in nerddom, the fetishization of "git gud"' (which is broader than just video games, but also trivia, or here nerd ethics (whatever the fuck that even means) etc) and it can be such a toxic habit to get into and hard to get rid off (I at times can be annoying because I know more 40k trivia than is good for a person).
They have a pattern of retroactively distancing themselves from bad actors in the community whenever there's a scandal. [This post from a year ago points out another notable example](https://www.reddit.com/r/slatestarcodex/comments/qcrhc4/can_someone_provide_an_overview_ofintroduction_to/hhhvy43/)
This is part of the reason why I've been documenting SBF and Caroline Ellison's posts, btw.
>Math summer camp
God damn it I guess that makes me a nerd, FUCK, and I even went twice! I promise I'm not as much a nerd as "math summer camp" makes it sound
The original thread (from April Fools Day!) is extra funny to read
with the added knowledge from the review that rejected his decision
theory paper. He attempted peer review, then just right back to
squabbling on twitter where he … STILL fails to twist the conversation
away from the gaps in his logic.
Translation: I didn't lose money on this scam, I gained money. And no, [I won't be returning the stolen money.](https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/FKJ8yiF3KjFhAuivt/impco-don-t-injure-yourself-by-returning-ftxff-money-for)
Bahamian jails are reportedly rather unpleasant, so I can see why a certain type of "nerd ethics" could be unpleasant to follow all the way into a foreign jail.
Ironic, considering that “hide your True Power Level from the laity”
is the first commandment of all nerd ethics, and I think SBF followed
that pretty well.
I think the official story is that he is too professionally pessimistic to get fooled, and the more plausible story is that SBF money was sour grapes for him because SBF didn’t want to invest in MIRI/Lightcone
His ego cannot tolerate the idea that if he got conned by by SBF that
he would just get completely played by an AI. Not that an AI would care
to spend it’s time conning larping nerds on the internet.
Considering twitter might not live that long I was going to ask if you could make an archive link. [But I decided to just make one myself](https://archive.vn/zex4M) perhaps good to start doing now. (or well good to have started doing this a year ago but still). Sadly this doesn't save the entire surrounding thread, but at least it is something.

I wasn’t fooled of course, it was all the others.
What exactly are “nerd ethics”? Does he mean LessWrong rationalism, or like Geek Social Fallacies? Either would be unpleasant for the mainstream

is this the thing where they redefine “nerd”, only they’re now trying to claim SBF isn’t one
“I don’t know if I’d say I was fooled” can either mean:
I was fooled and I don’t want to admit it.
I wasn’t fooled because I was in on it.

the tweet
Fire up the interdictors!!!
Do we know what he meant by “nerd ethics”? Is that a term he’d used before?
