There’s a book series I like a lot. ‘Berlin Noir’ by Phillip Kerr. The stories are set from 1934 on to the 1960s. The hero is an ex-cop turned private eye. In one of the books the hero is talking to one of his old police buddies. “Last year we executed about 30 people in all of Germany. This year we’ve already had over 200 executions. I don’t know where this is going to end…”
