4·17 hours agoVoting should be mandatory. I read about how other countries handle their elections and I notice that people in Australia and Brazil have far great satisfaction with their system. Part of it is they have laws that make voting easy and secure. Since voting is mandatory they receiving time off to vote.
Another advantage of making voting compulsory is it helps reduce conspiracy theories about people voting twice. Everyone knows that everyone gets one vote and they must use it.
Also jury duty which is also compulsory is much more of a burden than voting so if they can force you to do jury duty we can have everyone vote.

politics @lemmy.world•A New Report Reveals the Real Reason Democrats Lost in 2024English
7·17 hours agoI guarantee you that for whatever district or race if you compare the Democrat and the Republican running in that race you’ll find that the Democrat is less corporate and cares more about the people than the Republican in that race does. Voting for the Democrat even the one who wasn’t your first choice in the primary brings you closer to where you want to be and helps shift the Overton window. Primaries typically happen every election cycle and eventually by electing enough Democrats flipping every seat you can will either result in the Democrat you believe is too corporate to shift their beliefs or will result in their ouster with someone who is less corporate.

4·3 days agoI see people mention this often and I understand where they’re coming from because it sure seem like it’s the reason thinking about how Republicans do something bad and it never gets done. While it’s true that this happening I believe the real issue is actually not enough Democrats in office. Democrats when in power are often stuck with razor thin margins and a few of them are basically DINOs like Joe Manchin. If we had more Democrats in office we wouldn’t be stuck with trying to deal with Joe Manchin because we’d have enough votes even without him.

Europe@feddit.org•Will it even be possible to enter the USA as a European without breaking privacy laws?English
6·4 days agoI’m doing all I can to oppose this. I believe that if this is enacted it will create a bad precedence that may result in other countries adopting similar requirements. It must be firmly rejected now so strongly that no other country dares to try it. My goal is to convince hotel companies to oppose the policy because they will be hurt by less people traveling.
I urge everyone to contact hotel companies based in the US and say you won’t be coming if this is enacted or say you’re avoiding the US because of the Trump regime. Also in truth even if this doesn’t get enacted I still strongly suggest you still avoid visiting the US. The more people who boycott the US the more companies will feel pressured to help defeat the Trump regime. Sadly in the US companies can have a lot of influence on politics although so far for the hotel companies I’ve checked it seems like they don’t have much political spending with the exception of Robert Bigelow who’s a right-wing megadonor. If you have no choice but to come to the US please consider avoiding anything he owns although judging from the Wikipedia article I think it’s unlikely you’ll encounter something he owns.

15·4 days agoI’ve been sending emails to hotel companies and urging them to oppose this. I urge you to contact your congresspeople and also companies in the travel, hospitality and tourism industry and demand they oppose this policy and more broadly ask them to stand up to Trump because he’s causing people to rightfully boycott the US.
Also to everyone who is boycotting the US thank you so so much, I’m really grateful and as are so many Americans who also hate what the Trump regime is doing. The more people who boycott the more pressure it will put on companies to finally stand up against the Trump regime.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•HDMI Forum is unwilling to disclose the 2.1 specification for open-source (Linux): according to AMD, they had submitted a functional, HDMI 2.1-compatible driver [for linux?], which the Forum rejected.English
52·5 days agoIf you want change you got to direct your comments to the HDMI forum. Here we can talk about it forever and if they never see anything they won’t change. I sent the following email to: admin@hdmiforum.org
Dear HDMI Forum,
I was recently saw the news that the HDMI forum was blocking open source implementations of the HDMI 2.1 specifications and I want to express that I really believe this is a bad idea. I hope the HDMI Forum will consider allowing it. I can’t say I understand what the concern is or the reason for blocking it but I really doubt that whatever issue is envisioned will actually come to fruition, instead I believe that allowing open source implementations will be beneficial for adoption of the standard and since if I understand correctly the licensing fees are based on hardware sold so having open source code will of course not exempt anyone from HDMI licensing rules.
Thank you so much for your consideration,

Maybe it’s not perfect (I already wished I worded one sentence better) but I think what matters most is just trying your best and using your voice whenever you can. Be sure to send your email too, the more they receive hopefully the higher the chances that this works but of course be sure to use your own wording, I just put that here for an example.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The richest people in the world are morally bankruptEnglish
14·6 days agoYou got to vote and be active in politics and encourage as many people to do likewise. If more people did that the sum of our power would be far greater than the power of billionaires. We can then have reforms like regulating campaign contributions and lobbying and passing more regulations that protect the people.
For some countries there are things working against us. For example in the US billionaires have a lot of power and contribute heavily to politics in part due to the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. FEC which opened the floodgates for unlimited political spending and has really harmed our country. My solution to this is to encourage people to boycott companies that donate heavily to Republicans and most importantly encourage people to vote for people who will help stop all the corruption.

16·6 days agoBill Gates was ruthless during the 90s. Just as a random example he tried to make ACPI only work with Windows saying “It seems unfortunate if we do this work and get our partners to do the work and the result is that Linux works great without having to do the work” just as a random example.
Maybe he’s making up for it now but still it’s more complex than him just always being a good person.

3·7 days agoI posted it there! Before I was worried to post there because I didn’t see any recent posts.
I was just thinking, one way to start adding Oracle might be to create a Database section and mention Oracle’s database and perhaps other closed source/bad solutions like Access and suggest open source alternatives like PostgreSQL and MariaDB.

It’s better than before but not everyone gets it yet. When you see a comment like that the solution is to acknowledge or understand their concerns and then explain why it’s still important to vote. The most common misunderstanding I see is that some people claim that both sides are the same because of one particular issue that is only a small part of what a candidate’s policies are. We can do a let’s look approach by asking them if they are the same on other issues and seeing if they are truly the same on the issue they are concerned about.
Or might be better to just educate people who are willing to learn instead of arguing with those who won’t.
Also with that said on more reflection I do realize that some of these issues are past grievances that people bring up and hopefully next time they will vote. For example I do think not having a primary did cause some people to stay home. We must not repeat that same mistake, the next primary must be done fairly.
