It’s always funny to me to read a history of something I lived through written by someone who didn’t. I don’t think anyone who was in the industry at the time would say the Zip drive dominated the 1990s.
To set the scene, most people in the 90s didn’t own a computer at all and the majority of people who did own a computer never owned a zip drive. While Zip was the most successful of the Superfloppies, it was never ubiquitous. By the sales numbers, 10-15% of computer owners bought zip drives. Compare to a floppy or CDROM which is close to 100%.
The reason it vanished quickly was simple: Zip was never that good and CDRW was much better. As soon as the prices dropped for CDRW, Zip was a goner.

I can imagine even an hour car ride would have seemed much more daunting
Not at all. I started driving at the end of the 1980s. My grandfather taught me. He also taught me how do the basic car maintenance, like changing a tire and checking/refilling the fluids. In my trunk was always the spare tire+jack, a bottle of oil, a bottle of water, a toolkit, and a small empty gas can. I never needed them except the spare tire once. I never worried about getting roadside assistance.
Me and the girl I was dating at the time used to just pick a direction and drive for an hour to see what we’d find. It was one of the best ways to get some privacy when you both live with your parents!

What would be the value in deleting such an old message? It could easily be stored in a back up of the recipients device and will never be actually deleted.
Even with Signal there is no privacy when communicating with someone you don’t trust.
Also you need to trust their setup. If the recipient is allowing signal to show message content in notifications then every message you’ve sent has already been compromised.

I recently installed qemu and used it to install ms dos in a vm so I could play a few old games during a train ride. I had to use an android vnc client to connect to the vm and a bt travel keyboard to control it. The dos install took a while but once I got it set, it ran well enough to play old dos games.
There are probably better ways to play old dos games on an android phone but I had fun setting it up.
I use a self hosted Wazuh server. There is a lot to it but its very comprehensive.

Some would say that a generated random series of sounds is a form of avant-garde music. So it could be immediate.

In the context of No Stupid Questions, I understand a genuine question to be one where the asker seeks knowledge and/or understanding, for example: Is it safe to eat cheese that’s been in my freezer for 3 years?
Maybe I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure its not for people looking for debates or arguments.

Unless I’m missunderstanding, thats what a copyright notice is for.

For European VPS providers:

Great article but this shouldn’t be called “Tricks” it should be called Shell Basics. I’m old enough to remember taking an Intro To Unix course and there was an entire day on the shell where these types of commands were presented as essential learning.

If you have skills that are in demand in a particular country then there will be a path to residency and possibly citizenship. Many trades are in demand in many places. In some places the demand is so high you can get by speaking English. There may even be incentives offered to people with qualifying skills to move there, like low or no income tax.

Also people who get hair cuts and/or shave their heads?

One way by 1994 was you got your Windows 3.1 computer and you get a modem and plug it to your landline. You install an app called Trumpet Winsock and then you then you pay for a subscription to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Then your computer uses the landline to call your ISP to connect to the internet.
Then you run a browser and its like today but slower and more primitive.

In 2002 I was lost. I went to Las Vegas ready to gamble it all away. I got in late. There I sat on the bed. Unable to move on. I don’t know why but on a whim I opened the drawer of the night stand. There I saw it. I don’t know who put it there or why. The Linux Bible. All I know is from that very day my life was changed.
You seem like the type that really likes stereotypes instead of depth of understanding and nuance.
