  • Regardless of what this case is about, I think it’s wrong to offer plea deals that negotiate the sentence below the death penalty.
Even if I’m 100% innocent, I’m gonna take the plea deal instead of risking my life in court.
If there are crimes so serious that they warrant the death penalty, there should be a trial. And if we’re okay with letting this person live, why did we consider taking their life in the first place? It’s a very coercive way to do “justice”. Admit to the crime or else we might kill you.

  • Personally I find that the more anime I watch and the more “anime-literate” I become, I naturally develop a kind of backlog regardless of recommendation algorithms. For example: I watch Mawaru Penguindrum -> I search up the director -> I find out that director Ikuhara is famous for making several other interesting surreal anime -> Yurikuma Arashi, Sarazanmai, and Revolutionary Girl Utena added to the backlog.

I also definitely get a lot out of browsing random people’s profiles and adding stuff that they have on favorites (I have like 45 profiles bookmarked in my browser). This is personally my favorite way to find stuff, just jumping between reviews and profile and conversations in comments.

And then of course there’s other sites where you can find recommendations like lemmy, r/anime, or Youtube. It’s hard to find good anitube nowadays, but there’s still some really good channels out there if you dig. ZNoteTaku and The Bellman are some of my favorites that I’ve found. Trixie the Golden Witch, too. Maybe STEVEM, hazel, and I’ve heard kenny lauderdale is supposed to be good. (This could be its own thread).

But anyway I’m kinda rambling. There’s plenty of ways to find recommendations. Personally I don’t find recommendation algorithms necessary. But if you do, then maybe stick to AniList or MAL. Personally I use MAL but it doesn’t really matter. If you have friends with anime lists, use whatever they use.

where you’re supposed to have decades of Magical Girl trope logic that it brutally defies

From my experience, it’s the opposite. If you’ve seen lots of magical girl anime, Madoka doesn’t really stand out. If you haven’t seen any magical girl anime before but you assume it’s all shallow and happy, then you will be surprised by Madoka.
The eternal struggle of being a mahou shoujo fan is hearing people talk about how Madoka is such a shocking genre deconstruction and then finding out that they haven’t seen any other mahou shoujo before. It’s obvious that they’re just repeating what they’ve heard other people say.

To be fair, Madoka is probably much darker than Pretty Cure or Aikatsu, but it’s only marginally darker / more mature than Cardcaptor Sakura, Princess Tutu, Lyrical Nanoha, or Creamy Mami. And it’s not a bad show, it’s just wildly overrated. Maybe I need to rewatch it

Edit: and for the record, people also exaggerate how dark Princess Tutu is

  • Back when I was really into Pokemon I liked Dewott. After not playing Pokemon for several years, I think Pikachu became my favorite; it’s really the only pokemon you get exposed to if you don’t play the games and the design is very iconic.
About a year ago I played Cobblemon (Minecraft Pokemon) and Joltik / Galvantula became my new favorite. 🕷️

  • You’re basically right. The kami in origami means paper 紙 while the kami in kamikaze means god 神. That doesn’t mean you couldn’t make a pun about it, but the more fundamental problem is that kamikaze does not mean “suicide attack” in Japanese. The actual word for it is tokkou 特攻, a euphemism that means “special attack”.
Kamikaze originally refers to this historical event where a “divine wind” protected Japan from invasion. The term was later used in relation to suicide attacks, but I think tokkou is the word that’s more commonly associated with the WW2 suicide attacks in Japanese and kamikaze has kept its original definition.
