Fuck AI@lemmy.world•AI is mostly a novelty, a heavily subsidized toy that produces little more than distraction [Cory Doctorow]
5·2 days agoWhat is novelty though? It can be used to shortcut your development time, your documentation time, your presentation preparing time, that’s a shit ton of stuff that developers/office workers do.
I think making false narratives is not how you fight AI, you fight for regulation on Data center water use, noise pollution, then let the cost bankrupt the companies that need to go bankrupt.
Although maybe this is just one of those communities that wants to endlessly circlejerk around an issue.

Technology@lemmy.world•Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees: while those who worked entirely onsite reported the lowest.English
4·3 days agoI feel like this is a pretty useless study, this is going to be entirely subjective what you prefer. Optionality gives a lot of upside, more than either extreme.
Personally I prefer being in the office, better for my focus, my likely (undergoing diagnosis) ADHD as fuck brain, but I also have dynamic work hours so I can simply avoid peak traffic.
That being said, if I was required to be in the office everyday at a set time e.g 9 to 5 I would fucking quit.

I don’t, my day us shifted, so I commute later, instead of like an hour and a half my commute is 50 minutes (which is still a lot for a European) but in exchange I live in my hometown
I feel like there are various pieces of cinema pointing out why this is very fucking problematic

I love Man of Steel, needed a bit better editing (because his conflict between helping humanity or not is undermined by pretty early on by helping those offshore workers) but otherwise I think it’s a pretty good movie.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•US Energy Secretary: “I'm thrilled to report that tomorrow morning, on July 4th, we will end subsidies for wind and solar projects”English
14·2 months agoIf you replaced all the corn that’s being grown for bio-fuels with photovoltaics you could meet the energy needs of the US, technology connections has a great video
You should probably watch this
Yep, season 2 is destroyed by the CW writers and the blackhole of charisma that is Anthony Mackie
Yes, it makes it sound like it was scientists against an idiotic government and that the scientists didn’t have any hand in it, when in fact they did.
There is a great video about it on youtube but there is no way I can find it.
Utopia is so fucking good. Probably the closest to a flawless tv show
Chernobyl is great, but if you look into it’s basically retelling russian propaganda that this was individuals fault rather than a matter of when not if tragedy.
Anyways best shows:
- Better Call Saul > Breaking Bad
- For all mankind
- Altered Carbon Season 1
- The Expanse (by far the best sci-fi)
- The Wire (first of its kind for cop show that spans season arc)
- The Sopranos
- Succession
- Severance
- Santa Clarita diet (unfortunately cancelled on a cliffhanger)
- The Boys is good but kinda meh ending
- Fargo
- Andor
- Band of Brothers

- Good Omens
- House of Cards first 2-4 season depending on your taste
- Punisher
- Daredevil (Netflix version not Disney)
- Mythic quest

Comedies:
- It’s always sunny in Philadelphia
- Scrubs
- Parks and Rec
- The good place
- Ted Lasso

Also 70K net or gross is quite a big difference.
Also me not having kids and commuting using an EV that’s charged at almost entirely by solar/nuclear means I am well below that threshold.
Where I live district heating also comes from geothermal heat.
