  • Welcoming immigrants with open arms is American.

Sadly so is being anti-immigrant. The Alien and Sedition Acts were created less than fifteen years after the Constitution. The Know Nothing Party was a popular anti-immigrant party in the mid 1800s. From then to the mid 1900s were, the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882), The National Origins Act (1924), Japanese Concentration Camps (WW2), Operation Wetback (1954), and those are just the big ones.

The ideals that you have for the US are noble, I hold them too. It’s amazing what the US could be if we (especially our politicians) actually held ourselves to those ideals while addressing our current problems.

  • Along with greater reliance on the private sector, the report also pushed for more integration with volunteer or faith-based organizations and increasing personal accountability. “It is the responsibility of every American to embrace their individual responsibility to lessen this burden by being prepared for disasters,” the council wrote.

There it is! More reliance on the private sector so someone’s pockets get lined and we get worse services. The idea of faith based groups helping and personal accountability is just added Libertarian icing on top. Isn’t personal accountability what help get all those little kids killed at Camp Mystic in Texas last year?

  • I don’t have a quick answer to your question but as someone who was born in America with a family that celebrates our Scotch-Irish heritage, I have a view/opinion on this topic that might be of some use to you.

The way I see it, people have two types of heritage, ethnic heritage and cultural heritage.

In my long winded explanation, Norwegian is your ethnic heritage, ethnic heritage has to do with your family and where they come from. The best way I can describe it is, a blend of where your family originated from plus the traditions that they still hold on to. Ethnic heritage is more rigid and unchanging.

Cultural heritage is more flexible, it’s influenced by where you grew up and where you currently live. It’s influenced by your friends and the types of media or leisure activities that you all enjoy.

Caveat: This is just an opinion that I’ve been toying around with, it’s not a fully fleshed out idea that I have any empirical evidence to back any of this up. I am open to constructive criticism that will help hone this mess of ideas into something more poignant.

  • More posturing to look like they’re taking charge. I don’t know if any of what I’m about to say is true but if those attorneys already had the accrued PTO, they will get their pay for that time anyway, at least that’s how it’s worked anywhere else I’ve worked in the US. Also, if they can prove that the firing was retaliatory, they may be able to get further compensation and payouts.

Like I said, I know nothing of their employment/contracts so I could be talking out of my ass, but if what I said is true then the government is paying more money than they would be if they just let the prosecutors resign. I could be wrong once benefits are included.
