I’m not familiar with that theory, but Europe has been building a robust public transit network since the early 20th century. The wars only slowed progress. Most Subway systems, rail networks, city buses, etc were quite strong already in the 30’s.
High Speed Rail is all (as far as I know) electric. Much of Europe has electrified lines, about 60%, which carry 80% of traffic.

The Russians don’t seem to get that all they are doing is fueling hate and resolve to resist and defeat Russia, while Ukranians are creating real shortages for Russians, which fuels hate for their own government.

I have a stick Pc and a windows tablet that run Windows 10. They definitely don’t fly, but media playing and light browsing (no more than 3 tabs), work. With 4gb they’d be comfortable. One has been converted to Antix and the thing works decently. Installing W10 with 2gb and 32 Gb disk was a bitch though (they came with W8)
I used to travel to NYC a lot for work, from Europe. I didn’t need to pack a suit. I usually packed a change of underwear and a t-shirt, and laptop etc in my cabin bag. I usually bought some jeans and a few clothes which were cheaper, like brand jeans, etc. Some toiletries (the small travel sizes) when not provided by the hotel. Then I would go to Canal and buy the cheapest bag for the return.

I hear you. When I mentioned a mini I didn’t mean a no-name. Most enterprise manufacturers make minis, and support Linux. Search “Lenovo tiny Linux” for example.
If your parents are “hardly computer-literate Boomer”, their use will be pretty basic, no? Why waste a steam machine? Get a slightly used Lenovo or other enterprise grade SFF pc, or even a mini. Install Debian with KDE or Mint. Ultra stable, Massive support. If possible with a Ryzen. Plenty of graphics power even for ligh/medium gaming. Driver problems are unlikely in a 2-3 year old business machine, and will be relevant for 5-10 years for their kind of use.

Efficiency above doesn’t convey what China offers, their online frontier models cost 10% of what western models do, not 10% less, 90% cheaper. Also their open weights, which you can run in your own equipment (high end) can do about 80-90% of what these Frontier models do, for free.

That’s because English. I’ve had very nice journeys where I’ve chatted with perfect strangers on Spanish trains, and to a lesser extent in other countries in Europe. You do want to understand the unspoken codes that signal “let’s talk” or “leave me the fuck alone”. Same happens in bars, for example. But yeah, my experiences in trains in Spain have been generally great, with the odd near horror story.
It hasn’t been people hoping. There are quite a few analysis papers out there doing the math of the impossibility of achieving profitability of the current US model. Chinese models offering equivalent performance for 10x lower cost, and near frontier level open weight models to run in house for the cost of the hardware, and this hardware being way more modest, makes the bubble pop a certainty. As with data loss, the question is when, not if.
