  • I work retail in the US. It’s not just some meaningless “policy”; it’s drilled into us that we shouldn’t obstruct a suspected shoplifter, confront them, or even politely ask if they have a receipt. People who try to intervene are putting themselves and others at a bigger risk than they realize. What she did was a MAJOR no-no.

Companies have decided that the loss of profits from shoplifting are negligible compared to the risk of a lawsuit or worker’s comp due to an injury. Plus, for all I know, the shoplifter has a weapon and/or untreated mental disorders. I am neither qualified nor paid to deal with that.

  • It’s fine if OOP hates South Park. It’s a divisive show. However, dark humor is indeed a valuable thing. Yes, sometimes assholes call sexism, racism, homophobia (etc) “dark humor” in an attempt to excuse what they know is wrong, but that doesn’t mean that the concept of dark humor is flawed.

Dark humor is often used to mock and/or point out hypocrisy. Sometimes it deliberately makes us uncomfortable. We should always reflect on ourselves and our culture as a whole. That’s a vital part of becoming a better person.

If OOP chose to “mute” me for expressing that opinion, I don’t think I’d be missing much.

  • I think it’s safe to say that AI hate is indeed popular irl, we just don’t have frequent conversations about it.

Personally, I think AI may have potential (hey, I’m a sci-fi fan), but we are going about it in the least honest, ethical, and sustainable way possible. I DO NOT want the current generation of AI “entrepreneurs” to have ANY influence over real AI, if we ever even develop it at all.

I hope that Bezos and the like are remembered like those carnival hucksters who built absurd flying contraptions that didn’t work. When the Wright brothers came along, everyone promptly forgot their names.
