I started this movie and was intrigued by the potential for a movie that explored the class struggle. Nobody in the movie could be considered a “good guy”. The closest was the low intelligence cousin that just got wrapped up it things. The major thing I left the movie with was just anger at how it ended. It built all this class struggle stuff up just to end it like “lol aliens”. It’s like the ruling rich made this movie just to laugh at the people who would go see it. Maybe I am just jaded with the fucked up reality of capitalism but this movie left a serious bad taste in my mouth.

eh, i think lanthimos’ films are usually shallow in terms of meaning. sure, there are themes that are explored but it never gets very deep. he literally said in response to questions as to why he made certain choices: “because i thought it was funny”. and i tend to believe him. i think he mostly just makes stuff for the fun of it and without much deliberation on what it might mean. and i like that.

now i am a fan of his stuff, bugonia however i did find to be a bit underwhelming. i enjoyed “kinds of kindness” a lot more.
