Back in the 5400rpm days, defrag could really make a difference, especially with sequential reads. One of the biggest factors was your cluster size vs your average file size. If you had 4K clusters (common at the time), but a lot of files that were slightly larger, it would speed things up as the disk heads didn’t have to jump around as much.

Bonus was just being able to watch it sort.

Funny thing: I almost never did this (or just didn’t have to) back in the day. As such, I don’t have nostalgia for it.🫤

Back in pre-95 days where it was all DOS based, that thing really would make your system a bit peppier. Granted my hard drive was 540mb back then (which was gigantic thank you very much), so we may have evolved a tad. Boy I love tech-back-in-my-day.

Next whipper snapper, let me tell you about the AOL…

      540mb

      🤯

My first computer was a 386DX with a 40MB hard drive. Or was it 80. In any case, there was this thing called DoubleSpace. It didn’t really double the space but it helped a little.

Internet came through my unversity’s dial up connection. With a cable though, not this thingy you cradle your phone into.

Browsing actual remote web pages (in plain text, I was a Luddite already then) was quite the experience!
