I think it’s a psyop to use the worst cameras imagineale in public places to make you feel worse about yourself.
Changing rooms feel like they’re deliberately lit to make you feel awful.
Relatedly I’ve always thought improving the lighting in middle and high school bathrooms would go a long way towards reducing self esteem issues
I’ve always hated these cameras. It’s not just “you’re being watched” it’s also comes with some amount of “you can’t be trusted” and “guilty until proven innocent.”
I just need a particular size washer/nut/bolt, not to be reminded that Home Depot thinks I’m a thief by default.
Don’t support home depot, they support MAGA. Shop at your local hardware store like Ace if possible, or Lowes when needed.
A new, pretty bougie grocery store opened up near me, and I bought some stuff at the self checkout. I scanned a piece of fruit, and, being unfamiliar with the system, I then tried to scan my next item instead of entering in the number of that scanned fruit I was buying.
After a few tries at this the self checkout throws an alarm, and the supervisor comes over with their supervisor key, and the system makes you and the supervisor watch a security video together showing what you were doing before the alarm went off. SUPER awkward.
Also in Home Depot, at least the one near where I used to live, the tools aisle has one camera in each bay. If you lingered near a bay, the screen attached to the camera would activate itself and show the camera’s view of you as well as loudly sounding an alert every thirty seconds or so to remind you that it could see you.
It made me actively avoid buying tools there.
The cameras at self checkouts I’ve seen has even worse unflattering upwards angles that really gets the perfect angle of the double-chin.
self-checkout… camera?
ya its dystopian as hell
it’s just such a weird contrast. everyone here loves self-checkout; less wait for buyers, less register work for the people working the store, less downtime for everyone.
but then again the us has baggers and greeters which imo is also dystopian.
Germany is almost comical about it. There will be long lines for the checkouts with the self-checkouts completely empty.
Oh you get baggers and greeters? We just get an underpaid teenager to occasionally unbag everything during random checkup
One of many reasons not to shop at Target. CVS has them too.
My favorite is if you happen to be walking by a fire exit door at Home Depot it very loudly reminds you that you’re being watched on a camera.
Here in the Nethers; Lidl, Plus and Jumbo have them as well. Lidl and Plus show you what their camera sees, and it’s aimed at where you scan your products anyways. Jumbo aims them at only your face. I don’t know how they would check if steal or not, by your face.
At least they don’t show me what I look like 😃👍
And just when you think you can sing - you hear a recording of you singing. sigh.
that’s me but with talking.
hate the sound of my voice on tape. though the constant one in my head is more disconcerting.Everyone sounds so, so different in their head vs their recording! It’s so interesting to hear that for the first time!
Face authentication in banking apps is even worse. My suicidability peaks at those times
My least favorite part of the panopticon.
The Needling is curious about this crop job lol
I’m comfortable with my awkward form. But it’s disturbing seeing yourself out of the corner of your eye well trying to scan groceries.
That’s me with my voice. I build up my confidence for months and one echo on the other side…
Check out the daily image of you getting home in your doorbell cam. If that doesn’t get you back on a diet, you’re already lost.
A scanner darkly
I get that just looking in a mirror. :(
Though I’ve never learned to love myself.
I already know I’m an ugly old man, so no change there!
