Having been born there and live there until just a few years after Covid. The people moving there did a number on the state. Between the “Freedom” crowd, Michael Flynn (muliple rabbit holes on this topic), Moms for Liberty, “health freedom”, which is fucking up every hospital board, and honestly much, much more. That state will be deep read for a very long time.

Concur. I moved there in 1997… got out in 2024. The covid years brought the worst people of every other state.

Well they definitely ain’t the largest blue cities NYC, LA, and Chicago are all much larger and blue.

Jacksonville is one of the country club meccas, and Tampa is where all the conservative old folks go retire. Both those usually indicate a conservative lean but it is much closer than I assumed

i don’t remember tampa being as red as the redneck shithole towns, plus they have USF. st pete is definitely dark blue, clearwater might be the reddest “city” in that area (scientology owns most of it). not as familiar with jacksonville, but it probably is more red than the rest
pretty much. st pete has been building a lot of “investment” housing under the guise of being “affordable” housing to displace results by out of state and investors. not that I don’t like other people, but it’s what it is now. I mean I debated renting a place for $450 to do art at and that the last time I was there is now $6000+ and it’s everywhere around here. It’s like oh yeah the rent is now 5k-6k-8k++ a month … my first car cost $600 to drive down town.

There is no going back to the Republican Party of McCain and Romney. Their base has made it absolutely clear what they want, and it’s to be as cruel and proud of their ignorance as possible.
Their current base has made that clear, yes. But they could change who their base is by appealing to more moderate voters instead.
I doubt it but we’ll see. They have no redeeming qualities as far as I’m concerned. I can’t imagine a future voter aligning with them over democrats when they are volunteering to be assigned with the shadow of MAGA over them.

Mainly due to the primary system. In the primary election, it will be their current base voting for which candidate to nominate, not the ideal base they might want. So the primaries will produce candidates that cater to the extreme MAGA base rather than moderates who have already been completely alienated from the party.
