The rule could go into effect sometime next year, CFPB Director Rohit Chopra told ABC News in an exclusive interview ahead of the policy announcement.

For context, the poor credit ratings which go with medical debt are concentrated in the south, where states have limited the reach of medical safety-net programs.:
