The U.S. Coast Guard will no longer classify the swastika — an emblem of fascism and white supremacy inextricably linked to the murder of millions of Jews and the deaths of more than 400,000 U.S. troops who died fighting in World War II — as a hate symbol, according to a new policy that takes effect next month.

Instead, the Coast Guard will classify the Nazi-era insignia as “potentially divisive” under its new guidelines. The new policy, set to take effect Dec. 15, similarly downgrades the definition of nooses and the Confederate flag, though display of the latter remains banned, according to documents reviewed by The Washington Post.

I mean, let’s be honest here: This was going to happen regardless of whether we elected a rapist nazi to POTUS.

If you start caring about nazi hate symbols then you need to get rid of a LOT of the active military… and apparently democrats in Maine.

No. Literal nazi shit is way past where the line used to be. People were routinely kicked out for that kind of shit coming out because a diverse military is objectively better at many things and if you can’t deal with that you are the problem in the eyes of the brass.

SS lightning bolts and skulls are ridiculously prevalent in the US (actually most “Western”) military.

At best? It is the allegorical nazi bar. The US Military (also, again, most “Western” militaries too) had no problem allowing nazis to take root and that inherently drives out everyone else until they are all jacking it to a facebook post about mein kampf.

The sad reality? All that “A diverse military is a strong military” is just about how much they are dependent on people of color whether it is a poor kid from the inner city trying to get a new start or someone putting in a tour for citizenship. And as that melanin dries up because people are realizing “maybe it isn’t worth killing people who look like me to get a better life… Also all the sexual assault”, that just leaves the “my daddy’s daddy’s daddy was a marine and I am too” crackers.

At which point… you kinda have to stop looking the other way on the “nazi corner” and just embrace it because nobody else is coming in.

Fair points. Honestly it might just be what I did that I never actually ran into that type of iconography being a non combat roll that was far more about doing your job well than killing people. I do also know that they have kicked out a few people I was going through training with for that kind of iconography and hate speech.
