    Basically Organic Maps’ private owners planned to commercialize and make components of the application closed source. Very much not in the Open Source spirit that had been touted, for which many external contributors donated their time. So, those who actually gave a shit about being open source forked the project into CoMaps. That is why the two apps very much look the same, because they more or less are, aside from the intentions of their developers.
