And surprisingly Linus the YouTube guy lately. My cousin randomly messaged me a week or so ago asking how to install cachyos because he saw the YouTube videos Linus tech tips did, I almost teared up
I have a friend who was very anti Linux for years (even banned it from the office that me and network engineer were using) and he texted me the other day to say he’s happily gaming in cachyOS.
Said his final straw was the LG monitor thing but now I’m wondering if he still watches LTT.
Of they’re doing “Proton support” why not just make a Linux version.
Because properly packaging/distributing your game is hard. Maintaining a build environment, running tests, having unique deliverables, it all adds effort. With Proton specifically, it’s a much lower effort to report. If there is a linux specific bug, it’s fine, because Linux isn’t officially supported, it’s just known to work with Proton. You also only need to ship one binary file (the Windows build), so you don’t have to adjust or alter any processes.
This may not be the reason they do it, but there are real reasons.
So essentially they’re offloading the work they’d do themselves to the developers of Wine, Proton, and ProtonGE.
I wonder if they contribute a donation to these projects.
They sell the game on Steam, Valve gets a cut, so Proton funding should be covered.
But I agree that we should donate to open source projects!

You’ll have to ask them. Maybe you should, and maybe they’ll consider it. If you don’t ask, it’s much less likely they’ll think of it themselves.

Valve does not recommend that anymore.
And for good reasons:
Nearly all Linux native games I have from steam do not work any more. Glibc changes. Xorg gone. Other stuff. You would need to maintain and adopt constantly.
Having a product that advertises native Linux support on the storefront but requires Ubuntu 20.04 is nothing we or valve could want

Don’t we have Flatpak as a solution to this? Why don’t developers or Valve make use of Flatpaks for Linux native games? Or is there a licensing issue?
Not really, no. Flat packs still need the host GPU, kernel driver and more.
I sometimes build software and opensource is easy for Linux. "Just compile once for fedora 40,41,42 and 4 Ubuntu versions, look how to build for Debian because the compiler there is 8 years old and then do that for very major update. Forever
Actually good question as they apparently are using an altered version of unreal engine (https://www.wardynamics.com/) UE has linux support, but maybe that got lost in the changed version.
Games are typically made once, given a few patches, then abandoned. They will not keep chasing Linux dependencies forever so things break all the time. Windows is more stubborn about backward compatibility.

No, that’s incredibly situational. Largely depends how much effort has been put towards making the Linux version.

Hopefully there comes a point when native Linux builds become more common, versus asking all Linux users to play with a performance penalty.
Tbh I’ve always has better luck with Proton versus native builds.
And it is true that performance via Proton can be better than on Windows, so it isn’t accurate that there is a performance penalty. In my experience it’s usually the opposite. Shader precaching is one major reason.
Windows is so bad that running a windows game through proton on linux can generally be faster. However, running the game natively on linux should be even faster than using proton. If companies cared about linux, we could have even more performance than we already do.
If M$ releases a dx13 where the api is worse and the primary feature is copilot integration we might see more vulkan native games. So far they have been smarter than that…

That‘d be great if it‘s got good gameplay. I‘d like to move away from EA‘s Battlefield. I‘ve tried a few other games but they don‘t quite cut it.
I would like to be a day 1 purchase if they can make it compatible. Very exciting!
How will the anticheat work? Most games work decently well on proton, but the anticheat is what really breaks these games on linux.
Anticheats work fine on linux, the devs generally just have to check a box enabling linux support in the anticheat.
Beancounters don’t like that, because linux doesn’t let some random program have deeper access to your computer than you yourself have.
I didn’t realize it was literally a switch, I thought it had something to do with the architecture of the OS and anticheat programs weren’t compatible.
Specifically, it’s that linux doesn’t allow someone a gilded-path method to ursurp control of your computer like windows does. The ‘switch’ in this case is turning off where it tries to, effectively, hack your computer to give control of it to the company installing the anti-cheat. We have a name for that type of program- it’s called a rootkit, and it’s a major security vulnerability that game companies are trying to rebrand so they can save money on client-side anti-cheat instead of spending money on server-side anti-cheat.
For the record, it’s a losing battle- client side anticheat will NEVER be reliable- it literally can’t, because at the end of the day you still physically have your computer.
It does. The switch in some anticheats is to just not require that on linux. Also not all anticheats are kernel-level in the first place.
