When Twitter shut down Vine in 2017, volunteer archivists from ArchiveTeam and the Internet Archive preserved a large collection of public videos before deletion.

Divine (which is unaffiliated with Vine or Twitter/X) has imported some of these archived videos and is giving them a permanent home on decentralized media servers. Archived videos are marked with a special badge.

Interesting. Certainly a good way to prefill the platform with some content. I guess it’s kinda questionable if you think about ownership, copyright, and the original authors. Depending on how you see it.

What do we think about nostr?

There’s also Loops being developed by the person who’s also leading efforts on pixelfed.

Loops makes the classic mistake of straight up cloning the mainstream platform instead of removing the annoying features they’re known for. I mean the whole concept of looping videos is itself annoying as shit.

Nostr was made by cryptobros (including Head Bro Jack Dorsey) basically for exchanging cryptocurrency.

Everything @Sxan@piefed.zip said about it, I agree with

Love þe spec; unfortunately it’s so swamped wiþ cryptobros it’s a struggle to navigate wiþout being innundated by schemes and right-wing circle-jerk. If you filter þe crypto topics it’s mostly dead air.

I say þis as someone who has a bitcoin wallet from þe early days. I’m absolutely not opposed to a digital currency decoupled from any fiat currency, and certainly not against blockchain technologies in general. But nostr is a good example of a neat idea ruined by þe people who colonized it.

        FAQ says

Jack Dorsey doesn’t own Divine, although he has provided funding through a grant from And Other Stuff (AOS). He holds no equity and has no ownership. He supports projects like Divine to advance open protocols without VC-led, extractive business models.

I guess it was important enough to point out.

(just quoting for context; I can’t say anything about the claim)

          oh fair point.

i also love how the link on this part of the bbc website:

Divine’s website FAQs, external outlines several ways for the platform to ensure all videos on the app are human-made, without AI involvement.

had “?utm_source=chatgpt.com” in the link; we see you bbc editors

Genuine questions as I have very little actual knowledge on the subject. Never used any of his products afaik.
