The controversy surrounds David Heinemeier Hansson, who has posted strident anti-vax and anti-immigrant views
1Password faced immediate backlash from customers this week over a $300,000 pledge in support of a Linux distro created by David Heinemeier Hansson, who has regularly published overtly racist blog posts that include comments calling for deportation of ethnic minorities in Europe.
The popular password manager is now a “distinguished corporate patron” of Omacom, the nonprofit foundation that oversees a popular Linux distribution known as Omarchy.
One viral blog post declared that 1Password “Supports the Ethnic Cleansing of Europe” because of the donation. Others on social media asked for suggestions for alternative password managers so they would not support the funding of a project from Heinemeier Hansson, better known as DHH.
The real kicker is that Omarchy is a shit distro, it’s just Arch with some very badly written scripts thrown on top. Any of the other Arch derived distros or just plain Arch itself are way better options.

The kicker is the doubling down by the CEO.
It’s one thing to step in a pile of shit; it’s quite another when people tell you, “Hey dude you just stepped in a cow patty”, to reply, “No I didn’t, and even if I did, I actually think it smells quite nice”
The only other corporate sponsor is 37signals, a company DHH is already involved with, so 1Password is kind of the first company to step in this particular shit. Maybe they can serve as a warning to other companies.
They seem to have a total of 18 corporate sponsors, if you don’t count whatever the fuck “token patrons” are.
The “token patrons” just appeared since I made that comment.
Not counting the token patrons, 1Password and 37signals are the only corporate patrons; most patrons are individuals who happen to have a company listed under their name. The head of a company contributing money isn’t quite the same as them having their company contribute money.
Based on this article I read, it seems like all of the companies are linked in some way with Shopify (which DHH is a board member of)
An unfortunate turn. 1Password has been at the front of the pack in password managers for a long time. There are other options, but 1Password has stood out for features and because “it just works.”
Now I suppose I’ll have to find an alternative. I like Bitwarden’s openness but it isn’t nearly as polished. Maybe this is an opportunity for them or others to rise to the front.
