Imagine having a dedicated work force that wasn’t fighting to put food in the table or navigate whether they have healthcare.
Like… you’re done developing Halo Campaign Evolved and now you need to immediately fix uo your resume and start interviewing (fuck your doctors appointment next month) - instead of working on a new game. What a waste of everyone’s energy
While that’s good the grass is not always greener the amount of time they are required to be at the office from a cultural pressure. To the point dying at work is a trope in anime.
Doesn’t Nintendo actually respect it’s devs, and avoids rushing games?
They didn’t get swept up in the live-service trend
I guess by “didn’t get swept up” the author meant these companies didn’t go all-in like western studios, because all 3 have their portion of f2p mobile crap, with Konami being the worst offender with, PES Mobile, eFootball and others.
I suppose another big difference is shareholder expectation. In the US, if you don’t grow every quarter, you’re dead.
Japanese companies can’t lay off permanent employees without triggering things like hiring freezes and other consequences. They’re usually put in shit jobs to force them to quit (though this can be illegal) or are offered a buyout for several months of salary to quit.
offered a buyout for several months of salary to quit.
That’s actually what I understand a layoff is. The company must compensate for some time in relation to the antiquity of the working relationship.
You might be referring to a firing? That’s when the company doesn’t need to compensate you because you fucked up or something. Where I live, Spain, firing someone is very hard but laying someone off isn’t.
If a company wants to get rid of a permanent employee, they have very limited tools when it’s non-consential. If they claim it’s financial, they have to (in theory at least) prove that to unilaterally dismiss and that can come with the burden of freezing hiring and other things.
To unilaterally dismiss otherwise, they need to prove gross/malicious bad conduct, performance problems (this still requires a long PIP process), or reassign the employee somewhere and have the employee refuse. For the last one, it can’t legally be too onerous to on the employee, but case precedent is hit or miss if it makes it to court. As I understand, most prefer to settle out of court and pay the employee to go away.
In my mind, layoffs are for downsizing head count rather than firing which is targeted to that employee.
As I understand it, certain numbers of actions to reduce headcount can also trigger things like hiring freezes, but I don’t know much about that.
Don’t Japanese companies outsource more labour and thus don’t require larger teams
The larger companies, including international ones, often outsource work to temp worker companies, where people can be let go fairly easily.
also, plants grow better with water and sunshine in good measure, and a you are more healthy if you don’t eat burger every day.
yea but the companies are mostly stagnant because of that too, they cant bring in new people to innovate, so they end up with slop.
As opposed to the slop the other companies create because everyone on the team is new and didn’t have time to do anything, so they just use AI?

Japanese regulation prevent gross disparities in salary. Executives are also directly responsible for failures of their workers.
Americans have shitty companies that make shitty products because Americans are cattle that will buy whatever they’re told to without question.
And they get mad at anyone who calls it out.
