Sorry for Twitter link…
On that note, does anyone know how the term “alignment” came to be used in the context of AI? Because I have my suspicions that it was borrowed from D&D but I don’t actually know if this is true.
that’s stupid enough that I suspect it’s correct. a lot of what rationalists do feels like a bad D&D campaign taken too seriously and given too much money
are we sure the answer isn’t that it’s from an anime? because it’s always anime
i think it’s a yud-ism, what was earliest usage?
The earliest dated reference I could find was here which links to another (undated) post where Stuart Russel used the (likely precursor) phrase “value alignment” in late 2014. Whatever the origin it looks like it picked up steam over 2015, as seen in this MIRI post.
But I could be totally off base, since Google’s date search is practically useless.
yeah, that’s about the time Russell drank the Yud kool aid
Fictitious existential threats are a favorite, because fiction is difficult if not impossible to disprove. We can’t know if any of this will happen, but WHAT IF IT DOES??? Then you’ll be sorry!
Here’s the mastodon link.

Old post but one of my favorite things on here is seeing people you recognize tearing apart TESCREAL garbage
