Europe@feddit.org•Denmark considered destroying Greenland runways amid fears of US attackEnglish
25·1 个月前France, Norway, Britain and Finland and even Germany also send a small number of troops. That gives me some hope for the future of Europe :) (Source: https://www.zdfheute.de/politik/groenland-bundeswehr-soldaten-usa-daenemark-100.html)
I agree that these companies are mostly not saints, but having them on European ground means the current US administration doesn’t get more taxpayer money. Even more importantly, here in the EU the data regulation is more strict and the US won’t be able to freeze our accounts as Trump did with the International Criminal Court.

1·2 个月前That’s a fair point but fairphone also tries to manufacture the smartphones more sustainable than the other manufacturers (unfortunately I can’t tell how big that difference really is). Nevertheless you might be right in that it’s maybe more effective to buy another phone and fund f.e. /e/OS directly.

2·2 个月前Wouldn’t it be fine if the id reader app only transmits the boolean of whether you’re older or younger than 15 years to the website? For me that would be an acceptable amount of personal data to share.
However I think that we need to regulate social media not just for kids but in general for the entire society. At least I don’t want to know how much time I’ve already lost because of the Tech-companies. Especially for people in a bad psychological state these programs are creating considerable damage through their addictive algorithms.
On Youtube for example an option is needed for disabling the “suggested videos” part (and it should be enabled per default). It’s true that in a free market one could just choose another provider but because of the network-induced monopolies that’s not possible.

3·3 个月前To be fair buying a /e/OS fairphone also directly helps the development of these alternative systems. Therefore I think its justified to pay a bit more if you’ve got the money to spare.

2·3 个月前In the case of Fairphone you support the further development of /e/OS also financially. Otherwise the alternative Operating Systems will never be able to fully mature. That alone can justify the purchase of a phone in my eyes (if you’ve got the money to spare).

2·4 个月前I agree, though I guess as long as there are more people to reach on twitter, politicians will switch reluctantly at best. So I think everyone - regardless of politician or citizen - who is willing to make the sacrifice of less content should do so.
That’s good news! However one problem I still see is that Wero will be limited to only the inside of the EU whereas the alternatives work also internationally. So not few people will still need paypal etc., which will probably make it even harder to convince them to switch over to Wero.
Some banks like Sparda Bank, Sparkasse and VR in Germany have their own app at least on android as far as I know. And the EU forced Apple to open its ecosystem to other apps.

Europe@feddit.org•"Fully committed to peace" Is it time to bring back conscription in Germany?English
1·1 年前I also agree that investing in training, equipment and deployment capabilities seems like a better option than having a conscription as the number of fighting personnel is roughly equal (and as a defender you need less people for defense). From what I heard the European armies match Russias army in power overall - however I’m not sure if they could be as fast as Putin in getting this power coordinated to the Baltics.
Regarding the median and wealth statistics: I agree that they are concerning especially for a rich country as Germany. However I think that is mainly due to the lower home ownership rates compared to most other countries. So I think it’s more an accidental situation (with f.e. historic reasons) than result of more neoliberal policies. Still an important point to highlight and work on.

Europe@feddit.org•"Fully committed to peace" Is it time to bring back conscription in Germany?English
2·1 年前I think the concerns mainly evolve around the Baltics as f.e. Estonia couldn’t defend alone against the Russian army and the armies of other nations could be to slow/ineffective to respond - before the region has been conquered. However I am also unsure how mandatory conscription could prevent this situation (maybe as a way to recruit more professional soldiers?).
