Yes I have 90s Toyota truck and did not realize it was a collectible with a devoted cult until I bought mine. I frikken love it and nod others when I see them.
I also recently bought a Chevy Volt to be my daily driver so that my Yota will last my life. I know on Reddit the Volt community is active and bigger than I expected. In person I check others but haven’t noticed any camaraderie yet.

NPR and public radio at large are national treasures.

Fuck them hanging chads
Hang all the Chads
Well okay then, that’s worth noting and being aware of. Thank you for that.
I upvoted this comment then went out to pull weeds from my retaining wall, considering it much of the time. IThe vast majority of clinical narcissists are rooted in social conditioning, comparatively few medical. There’s no reason to hold any sort of empathy or extra consideration for these people. Call them out. Especially the narcissist rapist in chief.
While I agree entirely, I stand by my assessment of that malignant narcissist. He has never expressed true empathy or caring for anyone but himself, his family and his devotees. Nothing he’s ever done was motivated by anything other than how it benefits him. Not a single act.
For every one of those things mentioned, his only motivation were to benefit him, which also happened to be seen as a boon to society.

Nah, that’s privileged bone spurs. Fuck that.
At least when my father did it he pulled an Alice’s Restaurant, which was likely very true for him, claiming everyone would be the enemy if he was forced to go. This was before AR was a folk legend btw, it just so happened that he was one of many who made that approach, it may have been common knowledge at the time.
Anyway that fascist clown deserves no credit for anything. Fuck everything he’s done, fuck him entirely.

Children of Time is how a multitude of people discovered AT and I’m stoked for that. He deserves the praise and accolades without question. I read it after Final Architecture and just kept going, looking for the next book by him. It can be a multi year endeavor to read his entire catalogue.
The only one that didn’t grab me was the first book of Tyrant Philosopher series so I dnf’d. I’ll comeback to it one day.
The other novellas I adore are The Hungry Gods and Elder Race.
Good reading and chatting my friend. Oh and my absolute favorite thing about e-books is being able to peruse the library and finding something instantaneously to read. Amazing.

You do know Tehran is the capital of Iran? Not a separate nation or power.

Yep both of those great reasons for e-books. And yes AT has been my favorite contemporary author for the last few years, just discovered Mielville in 2025 and been absolutely blown away by the prose and scope of his works. Embassytown still impacts my thinking and haunts me daily.
I started reading AT’s Final Architecture after I read The Expanse for the second time about 5 years ago and that was my first foray into his work. He’s so damn prolific and wide ranging. I still prefer FA and Dogs of War series to Children of Time, but that may be me pushing against the popularity of it.
Shroud, Cage of Souls, Doors of Eden are my favorite novels and novellas Ogres…spacing out the 2 or 3 that really stand out. He’s an international treasure for sure.

I hear that…I started using the library last year and read over 50 books in 2025. I was searching for a new career and took full advantage of my time. Started a new gig a few months ago and went from a book a week to one every few months.
Just finished Perdido Street Station by China Mielville who’s my new favorite contemporary author, right up there w Adrian Tchaikovsky and JSAC. Just starting Children of Strife today and have Faith of Beasts on deck.
I much prefer old school analog printed books, e-books are okay and audiobooks don’t work for me.

Read it again, it blew my mind. One of favorite sci-fi’s without question.

Have you read Lord of Light?

Not to mention endless supplies of money, meth and and cocaine -this guy’s been on a year + bender without a doubt
I have an old friend who’s a landlord and he’s almost always been super chill. He was an old school cannabis grower and bought all his properties using revenue from his gardens. Lives in small tourist/retirement town in Southern Oregon where property value is really high, housing options very limited.
He stopped growing about 10 years ago and now travels the world about half the year and manages the properties the other half. He’s got it almost set and forget. He’s also a seasoned carpenter/builder so does all his own repairs and renovations.

I haven’t read the books since the 80s and these and Lord of the Rings were my foundation of reading, I loved them both dearly. I’ve been considering reading them again soon, of course only first five were written when I was a fan, OPs review has me hesitant and may be best just to leave the books as a memory.
Last year I read Lord of Light for the fist time and holy WOW, that book is top tier and the fact that it was written over 50 years ago is mind-blowing, highly recommend.
I love this short story!
