  • Do you (or your friends) have an old device?

    – All you need is for FB is an internet connection. A friend of mine got an old Huawei from a thrift store and a TextNow SIM card for $5 from Target; BestBuy, WalMart and convenience stores sell them as well along with 7-day trial SIM cards.

You must use VPN. Proton’s free version should be fine. If you don’t have VPN, Proton is currently offering a 50% off on VPN until December 7 – I think it’s for 2 years for $59.76 (No, I don’t work for Proton but I paid almost $72 for a subscription five days ago. Mullvad is also highly recommended, it’s about 5€ a month and no long term commitments (I also use Mullvad and like it a lot).

    – I provided her with a face (free) from thispersondoesnotexist.com There are other websites, so pick one that you like.

After you have VPN on and a phone number (textnow, burner, hushed, textfree - pick one), then download FB and create a new account.

Use your DuckDuckGo email address! FB will hoard whatever it can from that device, as long as you don’t do anything else (especially banking) but FB you should be fine.

    – If you want to create an identity, there are plenty of websites. The two below are behind Cloudflare so you’ll probably need to CAPTCHA to get through (they may be the same company):

    https://www.fakenamegenerator.com/ https://fauxid.com/

No CAPTCHA needed to get in: https://generate-random.org/persons

    1. Get your email address and a phone number ready.
    2. Install VPN – for an old iOS you might need to have iOS 16 running (as per Mullvad and Proton); you need iOS 15 for FB
    3. Dowload FB
    4. Check out posts by @Charger8232@lemmy.ml especially if you’re interested in privacy and security.

The steps above are what my friend did for her FB marketplace account, then she switched to an old iPhone.
    Good luck!

  • Many skin care products have fragrance to mask the aroma of the finished product (and the skin).

Unless the products are made with essential oils, they [skin care products] have “masking fragrance” in the ingredients list on Unscented Products. These essential oils serve a dual purpose by enhancing a product’s skin care benefits and providing aroma.

Crafters and hobbyists will tell you that their finished candle, soap, lip balm, lotion, etc. smells unpleasant or off until fragrance and/or essential oil is added.

@DagwoodIll@piefed.social is spot on, witch hazel can be used as an after shave. Don’t worry about the aroma, it dissipates rather quickly.

  • Fantastic list, thank you so much!

I saved your post and will be using it as my reference; this is a better list than I made for myself. Albeit I already follow most of your recommendations:

    1. Is there a reason why you don’t have YubiKey on your list?
I didn’t like it at first but now I highly recommend it.

    2. What about the Camera Shy Hoodie? I know it’s DIY but IMO there are people here that might be willing to make it themselves.

Those Reflectacles are a bit expensive so they’re already on my wishlist! I also saved this: 7 Privacy Garments That Block Surveillance Cameras

    You rock, Charger8232! Thanks again!

EDIT: I forgot about Zenni glasses:

EyeQLenz and Zenni ID Guard™ are designed to reflect signals to help disrupt unwanted tracking under certain conditions. Results may vary due to recognition technology and environmental factors. Zenni does not guarantee that its products provide anonymity or total protection from surveillance and biometric identification.

  • Several of my friends and family are active supporters of Philabundance and the Food Bank of South Jersey.

When I was younger, my parents would take me with them to a soup kitchen especially around Thanksgiving. My mom and grandmom are great cooks so they were in the kitchen helping, my dad and I are the clean-up crew and grandpa walked around like he owned the place, lol. This went on for years until my grandparents started having trouble walking.

Last week, our elders called in a family meeting. We are making Halloween care packages for some people we know that are in need, filled with non-perishable goods (mac & cheese, soup, tuna, tapioca, crackers, beans, spam, corned beef, etc.).

The kids’ trick-or-treat bags are the full-size Halloween themed grocery bags filled with pudding, mac & cheese cups, ramen cups, soup cups, chicken (flat pack not can), PB & Cheese crackers and some candy, too.

We usually do this after Halloween (for Thanksgiving and Christmas) and the Goddess of the Canned (me) would help collect and deliver.

Anyway, thank you for creating this post, OP. It will help highlight and spread the word fact about food insecurity. There are a lot of people out there thinking about whether to buy their medicine or buy food.

So, if anyone wants to help, there are plenty of places in your area. Monetary donations are also welcome.
