You don’t have to pay for officiation, you don’t have to publicly announce any private details, in fact only a select few organisations in the UK are allowed to access the link between your name and deadname, same with gender markers. But most sites want you to pay, including gov.uk, and there is a lot of false advice.

Tbh I like my primary source of news being Reddit Lemmy.
