I’m pretty sure Nedry was the engineer. Arnold was systems administrator / operator. Neither were computer scientists.

26·5 days agoNope. In fact, I only ever bother to update it when I have issues with playback which is maybe one every few months.

Ah, fascinating. Poor Xerox though.
I think Microsoft put the recycle logo on theirs because Apple used the “Trash bin” moniker and Microsoft wanted to appear more green or whatever.
So he traded Firefox for… basically Chromium.

6·10 days agoI’d still be using my OG Google Pixel if it hadn’t suffered a sudden and unexpected death. I was using it like normal one day and it just turned off.

48·10 days agoYeah, no shit. No one wants to buy a new $1200 phone that does the exact same shit as the last $1200 phone.

At first I was like, “yeah who doesn’t remember that?” Then I realized that it was over 10 years ago and my heart sank a little… We getting old, homies.
You know I don’t think I ever checked out waterfox. I’ll give it a look.
Meh, until there is an actually good alternative to Firefox with a mature extension ecosystem I’ll continue to use it and just disable the new features I don’t like. I have tried a bunch of the alternatives and they’re all either massively lacking in extensions, are chromium-based, or are sketchy in some way. I think the most promising potential replacement is flalkon, but it’s not there yet and I’m a GTK Stan anyway.
I recently purchased a 65" Vizio from Walmart for pretty cheap and paired it with their Onn 4K Android TV box. Kept the TV disconnected from WiFi. It works pretty good but the TV liked to nag about not being connected so I created a hidden guest SSID that had no internet access and connected the TV to it to make it shut up. All in all it’s not a perfect solution but it works and no ads like Samsung TVs.

3·15 days agoI tried to get into Rust a few times and never liked it. One time I even played with a decent group of people and it still sucked. They can keep their game.
All of this awareness is really affecting my mental health.
I’m pretty sure Cloudflare requires you to use their nameservers if you purchase a domain through them. So you would need to transfer your domain to another registrar first. I could be wrong though. I’m not an expert on this stuff and prefer to just use a dynamic DNS service instead of paying for a domain.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Cities Panic Over Having to Release Mass Surveillance Recordings
5·18 days agoThat’s why I installed an analog camera DVR system in my home. It cheap, reliable, locally hosted, and best of all I’m the only one with access. (Not counting the Chinese government via the mandated backdoor in the DVR firmware) it’s great!
