Technology@lemmy.world•In wake of Windows 10 retirement, over 780,000 Windows users skip Win 11 for Linux, says Zorin OS developers — distro hits unprecedented 1 million downloads in five weeksEnglish
9·1 month agoI’m just waiting till I can install SteamOS honestly. Love my steam deck, and wanted to turn my old win 10 PC into a Linux machine but has issues getting any distro loaded because I’m dumb and it’s old. Hoping that when they release SteamOS for the chumps I’ll be able to work it though probably will just be left holding an old win 10 pc lol.

News@lemmy.world•Toyota’s Boss Said "Screw It" And Went Full MAGA GearEnglish
1·1 month agoI appreciate the detailed response! Right now I have a 2013 Impreza. My kids are growing fast and I’m not a small guy, though I am a single parent so it’s just us. My main considerations for the minivan are space (already kid is talking soccer, I lug around equipment for disc golf, general furniture movement), modern safety features, and fuel economy.
I’m certainly not opposed to wagons, have had a few in the past (Camry wagon and subaru legacys), and Subarus always have been good to me. The main reason I had somewhat settled in the sieena was for space and fuel usage. Nothing that Subaru has, has both.
I’ll def have to look into some other options though. I also don’t really like the Sienna aesthetic either haha. But bad looks don’t bother me if the function is there.

4·1 month agoIf you make claims you should justify them. Not saying you are right or wrong, but that’s a lot to say without pointing to reasons why, or frankly, what you even mean by that. For instance, how do they reduce safety for everyone else?

18·1 month agoOkay, so as someone with 2 small kids and in the market for a replacement car, the Toyota Sienna is the high mark across available minivans. It being a hybrid was attractive. What do people recommend as an alternative?

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that apart from not having a car and voting, the single greatest thing you can do for the climate is simply eating less red meat.English
1·6 months agoThe number of assumptions you make about my “principles” are ridiculous. You are reading way too far into the like 100 words I wrote. You sound super pissed and projecting a lot onto me.
All that garble to tell me no, you still don’t get it.

1·6 months agoI’m just laughing cause you still don’t get it. Nothing you do will matter. Yes, that’s depressing, and it’s also true. The numbers don’t check out. You can wave it away all you want, nothing you do will matter. Sorry. And yes that should make you angry. But that is what I mean by pragmatism. It’s a waste of time and energy to be angry. To believe you can do something about it. Instead, focus on being happy and making life better for others in ways we can, in the time we have.

44·6 months agoI could devote all my time to recycling, reducing carbon emissions, not driving, voting, not eating red meat, including forcing everyone i know to do the same - and the net result would be an iota of a drop in the ocean of change. i.e. nothing.
As others have said, until there is a global shift on how the world operates and the major oil companies, cruise lines, and airlines all shut down, nothing you or i can do will matter.
Edit: folks still don’t get it. It’s not a matter of apathy, it’s pragmatism. You will never, ever convince enough people to make a significant change relative to the big consumers. You will be dealing with the people who literally pollute and consume out of spite, and/or principle, or ignorance. For every thing you do, someone’s doing the opposite. We failed the planet a long time ago though lack of education and giving too many greedy people power. The world is too large and the snowball is over the hill.
The amount of fuel used by the cruise industry in about 1 minute, on average, is more fuel than you or I or any normal person would consume in their entire lifetime, by a lot. That’s on the low end. They consume 500,000 to 1.5 mil gallons an hour. The average person uses maybe 20 to 50k gallons their entire lives. You’d have to convince millions and millions of people to stop driving completely for 40 years to offset that. Tens of millions probably.
Not gonna happen. That’s just one industry.
Everyone’s not gonna just stop flying. Or stop driving. Or stop eating meat. It’s idealistic and impossible and frankly imaginary, no matter how much it may be necessary.
Why waste your time and energy doing things that will do nothing? Focus your efforts elsewhere. Policy change probably has the best chance of helping. But then I point back to the people actively and purposely thwarting any attempts at curbing consumption, and these people are billionaires etc. And at least in the USA, running the country.

2·7 months agoI’m sitting in my house folding laundry. CLEAN clothes. When out of the pile comes a tick that starts crawling up my leg. I grab it and try and smash it in a tissue. This thing is like a tank, it won’t crush no matter what I do. Had to take it outside, and then burn my house down.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Plex is locking remote streaming behind a subscription in AprilEnglish
3·10 months agoI use Jellyfin client on my new Samsung TV via a Google TV dongle (ONN tv, $25 at Walmart). Seems to work well.
My only complaint is the stream volume has been very low after a recent update. Downsampling helps but seems like it shouldn’ t be necessary.
Well at least one of those Switch Sports sales was a double buy by me because somehow the first digital copy I purchased, and played many times and put maybe 20 hours into golf, just decided to up and pretend I never bought it. One day it just told me I needed to buy it and my trial period was over. Despite having already bought it years before. I couldn’t find the proof of purchase email even though I had one for every other game. I emailed Nintendo, they said they had no record of my purchase even though they could clearly see dozens of hours played across multiple sports. I also have a video of my kid playing it like a year before this happened. I eventually just re bought it. It was honestly one of the weirdest and unsettling experiences of my life. Like a portion of my life was deleted and only I remembered. Even my brother was doubting me.
