I built an RS232 cable from parts from RadioShack 25 years ago, with no soldering, just electrical tape. It’s surprisingly easy if you don’t need speed. Mine capped out at 1200 or 2400 baud. Was it good? No. Did it work? Absolutely.

In this case, they’re talking about being in the natural numbers club, and applying the “successor” (or “succ”) function.
Growing up in Ontario in the 80s and 90s, the fact that you could buy beer and wine at a dépanneur was revolutionary. Can’t get that at Mac’s Milk!

politics @lemmy.world•To Cut Housing Costs, Some States Are Easing Fire Safety Rules
2·18 days agoI read an article from a somewhat progressive source a few years ago advocating for this very change.
The essential argument was that the “2 stairwells at opposite ends of the building” requirement was a product of an earlier era when building materials were more flammable, buildings didn’t have sprinkler systems, and some other code changes. The article said that it was much cheaper to build one stairwell in the middle of a building, adjacent to the elevator bank, and modern fire safety measures ensure that it’s still safe enough.
I don’t have a strong opinion, personally, but the argument doesn’t seem completely dystopian.

Technology@lemmy.world•U.S. Supreme Court declines to hear dispute over copyrights for AI-generated materialEnglish
8·20 days agoExactly.
Most of the comments in this thread are accusing him of trying to take credit for the work of a machine that’s just imitating other work. It’s the FuckAI echo chamber and people who didn’t actually read the article.
In this case, it’s more like he’s claiming to have created a genuinely creative being that deserves rights previously reserved for humans (like copyrights and patents).
It’s a completely different (and IMO, much weirder) story than people are assuming.

Technology@lemmy.world•U.S. Supreme Court declines to hear dispute over copyrights for AI-generated materialEnglish
17·20 days agoMy understanding is that he did do the work of creating the AI. This isn’t just someone using ChatGPT.
In this case, it’s not that he’s trying to claim copyright for himself based on coming up with a prompt. He’s spent years applying for patents and copyrights with the AI listed as the creator.

1·24 days agoSpeaking as a green card holder (who, by definition, went through the immigration process), I’m wondering if they’re alleging that he lied on his application.
It was a long time ago when I filled it out, but I do remember that there were a lot of questions about whether you’ve ever been convicted of or even charged with a crime.

4·29 days agoThe title of the piece is “boil the oceans.” Is that way he means, that AI and its negative environmental concerns be damned? If so, he’s lost whatever good insight with which he had to start.
The term “boil the ocean” means trying to accomplish too much at once. In the corporate world, we’re usually encouraged to commit to smaller, achievable goals. In this case, the author seems to be suggesting that companies need to take big, bold, risky moves. A phrase with better connotations would probably be “swing for the fences”.

1·2 months agoIn particular, you can generally get a (normal) driver’s license in any state where you’re a legal resident, regardless of citizenship. The REAL ID drivers’ licenses are restricted to US citizens.
(I carry my green card when I fly, which is frequent enough these days that I have it in my wallet, which could come in handy if I’m ever stopped by ICE.)

15·3 months agoCalifornia is pretty strict about taxing you if you spend too much time there.
I’m in Washington state (no state income tax) and have had colleagues who’ve spent a lot of time in California warned by payroll that they’re approaching the limit on time before you’re deemed a tax resident (maybe 180 days per year, but I’m not sure).
In particular, any part of a day spent in California counts as a whole day, as I understand it. So if you fly in on Monday evening, spend Tuesday and Wednesday, then fly back Thursday morning, it’s 4 days.
