  • My experience is not vast, but I’ve seen a lot more use of Power BI in companies than Tableau in recent years. I think Power BI is a frequent choice because of how mainstream it is. Most companies already have an existing license agreement with Microsoft for windows and office, so there’s a low barrier for entry if they need some general purpose analytics and reporting. This is also a vibe thing in part, as there’s a familiarity and comfort level already in place with M$, whereas Tableau can be a bit of an unknown for many.

I don’t think you’d regret either, but from a job search perspective I think you might fit with more companies with Power BI.

    Good luck with your search!

  • Albertan here, and thank you for highlighting our cartoonish provincial government at the moment. Securing conservative governments in Alberta is never that hard, but this bunch did so with little more than shit-talking the Trudeau government, half-hearted identity politics, and batshit conspiracy theories. Very low bar.

I think the pending federal election will be a fair indicator of how much right-wing bullshit we’ve had enough of, both in Canada overall and in Alberta specifically. Trump’s full-court press into authoritarianism has been an obvious game-changer in Canada, and I think most appreciate that the stakes are much higher this time around. Flirting with the neo-nazis on the right will no longer be an option for folks like PP and DS - they have to either go all-in with Trump or make a clean break to stand a chance with most folks this time around.

Unfortunately in Alberta, there won’t be an election call until 2027, so while I would love to “expel Danielle Smith and her ilk”, short of torches and pitchforks, we will have to keep building support and bide our time.

  • While fentanyl is deadly serious, the “crisis” of it flowing over the US border is the made-up emergency on which Trump bases his legitimate authority to levy these tariffs. Without an emergency he would have no legal basis to fuck around like this without violating our trade agreements (which he signed last time around), so it’s part of the narrative, regardless of any amount of truth to it.

The “crisis” will end only when they determine it is no longer useful to pursue these tactics and switch to some other type of fuckery. It’s just as likely that he will declare them resolved as a face-saving measure so he can stop the bleeding at home. Art of the deal!

  • I was looking at Proton for mail and calendar right around the time the Andy thing kicked off. I hadn’t yet pulled the trigger on Proton due to their fairly high pricing. I ultimately decided on Tuta for mail and calendar, and I have no issues using their native/desktop apps. I am still forwarding everything from my Gmail account as I slowly work through changing my email on key services. So far so good.

The one issue I had with Tuta is no ability to import mail unless you are at the highest priced tier. I’m on the middle one so no import. What I did instead was just download a copy of my Gmail to an MBOX file, and I have that on my desktop and access it with Thunderbird (read only) as needed. This was fine for me as I don’t have much mail of significance.

Switching was a small action, but one that made me feel immediately better, like I did something concrete in opposition to the rapidly enshittifying tech universe.

  • Thanks for the summary. I signed up for it just in case, but don’t think I’ll end up using it. I have a similar experience with Mastodon, but then I was never really into Twitter, either.

I share your feelings on the importance of open platforms. While reddit may have been shitty for a while, the whole third-party apps thing was an eye-opener for me, and started me thinking about (and moving toward) open source.

My next big challenge will be to de-Google, but I’m increasingly up for it. Problem is I have a ton of site identities associated with my email address there, so we’ll see how that works out.

  • The most galling part of it all for me is knowing that it’s all political theatre of the worst kind. I feel like we’re all just playing our parts while the unrelenting assholes of the UCP use the cover provided by this misdirection to further their tear down of our health care system and enrichment of their petro-buddies. The maga stuff is a perfect buffet line of sewage from which this government carefully selects their next target to generate more outrage and keep Albertans distracted. Fuckers.

I agree that if you’re finding it hard to go in every day it may be time for a change. The main strategy I have used is to try to get clear on what you want, what you would consider to be need-to-have vs. nice-to-have. You can do this by making lists of things you like where you are now and things you don’t. The things you like are what you want to try to replicate somewhere else.

The main thing is to try to be more about moving toward something you want, and less about moving away from something you hate. Not always possible, but good to strive for. Otherwise you could end up repeatedly changing jobs to get away from bad people and drama, which, as many others have pointed out, will always be there to some degree.

I wish you well in your search. Stress is a real killer, and sometimes we don’t know how bad it is until we’re out of that environment. Trust your gut.

  • Like others here, I dumped Reddit and moved here (and to Mastodon) full time. I also moved to Linux full time on my home laptop and haven’t missed Windows one little bit. I’m looking forward to experimenting more with a couple of other distros of interest (currently Pop_OS) and am having actual fun using my computer again. Heavy emphasis on adopting as many FOSS alternatives as possible in ‘24, and starting to separate myself from the big G.
