  • I use it for a lot of the same things folks have already said. Following news (Google News does RSS), some tech blogs, news releases for the things I’m invested in, some GitHub releases, the Lemmy communities I subscribe to (including this one), etc. I still kinda follow RSS feeds on Reddit, but that’s probably dead in a week. I’ve also used RSS-Bridge to build feeds for things that don’t automatically come with one, like some things on Lemmy that I wish did.

  • I’d love to see him do this shouting down, if you have a video of it.

The segment that immediately comes to mind starts at 21:29 in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=846jxr3DWNE

She makes the mistake of asking him how his wealth tax would work, and he basically steamrolls her.

So his plan for public grocery stores is only for people in unions?

His plan for 50 public grocery stores is only for people in those 50 locations, and won’t reduce the price of food by 30-45%. He also wants the employees of these grocery stores to be unionized, so yes.

The fact that he would actually protect our environment only helps if you’re in a union?

How? I’m afraid to encourage someone to ask him, lest they not get a word in edgewise again.

Lewis being the only one to call out Israel for its genocide and being the guy up there who wants to keep our money and resources here for the people instead of there for killing innocents is only good for unions?

So you would agree with allowing Palestine to kill innocents in Israel, then? Because pulling away from one side does not a signal for the other side to stop make.

And yes, half-baked. What the host in the video I linked got out of him re: his wealth tax is basically “read Linda McQuaig’s book”. Which is not an answer if you intend to be the one running the country. Also half-baked: his public grocery store policy, which will do absolutely nothing for food prices outside the areas those 50 stores operate, and it’s questionable if they’d do anything useful inside that area.

Also, environmental policies are not pro-worker, nor are they anti-worker. But where you see Avi being pro-worker, I see him being pro-union. As someone who is not in a union, that won’t help me even if he were to be elected, which… let’s be real. There’s a reason he hasn’t picked a riding yet, and it’s not that BS about rebuilding the party.

  • Does our immigration policy include educating people on Canadian values? Do those Canadian values include not fat shaming? If not, that’s a policy failure.

I’m not saying shitty people don’t exist in Canada. In fact you probably right now have the opinion that I am one. I’m saying, and have been saying, it is more common and very normalized in the middle-east, including Iraq. And I’m saying that if we’re going to let people like that doctor into Canada, it’s on us to make sure they understand that. She’s old enough to have graduated from Baghdad University in the 80’s, so this is not “you should know better”. This is “we should have taught you better”. Somebody involved in her ending up in Canada failed.

  • Oh, they were definitely taken to the accreditation authority. As for the connection, it’s really quite simple. If that behaviour is considered acceptable where you come from, and you refuse to leave that behaviour behind, you should be left behind. It is apparently common in Iraq and other Arab countries to shame people for being fat (particularly women), so this doctor absolutely saw nothing wrong with insisting her patient (not me, but a relative) agree to gastric bypass surgery or be dropped as a patient. The patient didn’t need gastric bypass surgery, and that wasn’t what she was there for. If her training in Canada didn’t include explanations that that behaviour is not appropriate, that’s on the accreditation authority. If it did and she chose to ignore it because that’s not how they do it back home, then send her back home.

  • You’re not wrong. But the problems are two-fold with the latter.

    1. We’re fighting with other countries over the same pool of people, and eventually, that pool is going to run out.

    2. Even if you ignore 1, you do need to bring people in at a pace that allows your infrastructure to keep up. We’re not doing that. So you either slow immigration or increase infrastructure spending, and the latter costs money.

  • Most of the people complaining probably know someone who did. Picture, if you will.

    1. Employer hires someone for cheaper. Doesn’t need to be an immigrant, but for the sake of what we’re discussing, assume it is.

    2. Employer gradually reduces the hours of a current employee for pick your reason. Likely current employee is part-time because they have few protections.

    3. Current employee’s hours reach 0.

    4. Current employee quits because well, they’re not getting hours.

That employee has successfully been replaced. Legally.
