  • I’m not sure why, but I prefer doing that, too.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact, that you are less limited to physical world perhaps?

With pencil, paper and rubber you are limited to always sharpening pencil, with rubber you left small bits behind that you need to clean, it does not even fully erases markings, and if you apply too much of a force — you can even tear up paper. And so on.

While with tablet you have the comfort of using pen-like object, but with less limitation of our whimsy physical word. You can even configure pressure and stuff.

  • The actual webview that is dead https://github.com/Divested-Mobile/maps

This fork is active and fixes stuff if something is broken, so at the very least it will be alive a little longer. Last release was 5.0, 2 months ago, with fixes for street view.

Gmaps wv is a dead project

Meh, not really. It is absolutely not dead for my usecase, for example. You still have streetview to some extend, still more full information about some places compared to OpenStreetMaps, photos, reviews of places, sometimes more correct pathways. So not exactly dead project.

It will become dead once google will entirely block anonymous access ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Google is actively breaking anonymous access to gmaps, so those things are also breaking

Yes, I am aware of that, but until google completely make not possible to use their maps anonymously — something akin to gmaps webview will have its use.

  • Contirbuting to open-source, open data and so on!

For example, why not contribute to OpenStreetMaps? You will help others and also will be going around your city more, possible discovering more interesting stuff :)

Or why not contribute to OpenFoodFacts? Adding prices, updating data, fixing wrong data - so much fun! And useful.

Or did you know that there is open review system, including places on openstreetmaps, companies, books? https://mangrove.reviews/ It is notably used in CoMaps. You can check plaes that you had been in and inform people about good/bad aspects of said place!

And more! Making world a slightly better place together.

  • While cellwriter is long dead, it is still fairly working.

It just requires you to use X11 session and programs. In some distribution (especially on distributions where maintainers patch cellwriter) it might eve somewhat work under Wayland sessions. Ad, also, it requires you to manually build your own database for each individual symbol. Program does not come with ready-to-be-used set of symbols.

As for recognition quality, especially for multi-language with different writing set (e.g. Cyrillic and Latin) scenarios, and general usability… Uh, not that great, even when program does work.

(I, as original poster, also was looking for a solution, but to this day never found one. This is one of things where Linux suck ass.)

  • I could chip in. (Even if 9 days later)

    Anyone else have similar experiences?

Yes. I went with this experience, at the very least, twice, during 2014 and 2022. It is just how it is.

Yes, bombs are falling, people who you happened to know are dying (think like your classmates who you never talked to), your favourite places getting erased from a face of the Earth.

But what else there? Unless everyone going to wake up and do something with anything — things will stay like that for a long time. And since world still functioning, almost like it used to, you still need to learn, love, work, stuff like that. War does not stop that, for better or worse.

I can not say, if that how it should be, however. I can not recommend anyone being in wars.

  • Nope.

    syncthing: Kommando nicht gefunden

As far I am aware - there is no other packages related to syncthing is avaliable in distro repositories and this one not included by distro by default.

UPD: there also appears to be syncthing-tools package in repos, but it is also not included in mine system by default and I never installed it myself.

The only trace of Syncthing on my system is… well, from that flatpak. And unless I missunderstund how any of that works, syncthing is included in flatpak and you can look for it in its manifest file: https://github.com/flathub/com.github.zocker_160.SyncThingy/blob/a786450f1305474e71c1f33c468ff3dc5758e238/com.github.zocker_160.SyncThingy.yml#L42 It takes syncting release from https://github.com/syncthing/syncthing/releases and adds it to build process.
