Could people take out their anger on the people causing rather than their peers? What kind of piece of shit do you need to be to not just ruin your peers life but also a whole movement by giving it a bad rep…

The people responsible for this are just there for the violence, destruction and looting. They use the legit protests as a cover. They don’t care about the people or the movement

I forget the exact details but in Milwaukee the cops shot a black kid and in response the community… burned down a gas station and hair salon in their own neighborhood.

There was a clip of a woman being interviewed begging people to stop destroying their own neighborhood. Something like “go to the suburbs and burn their shit down!! We need our weaves!”

Idk. A lot of unfocused rage and anger will take itself out on the first thing it can find.

on a society level i’d rather the dudes store get looted than constant school shootings but i acknowledge that is selfish

on a personal level if i was him i’d want a few buddies and ARs for sure

not sure how you reconcile that as a society, maybe address the issues that caused the original problem

It’s not selfish, just idiotic. There’s no minimum violence bar we need to hit, it’s okay to be against both.

maybe address the issues that caused the original problem

I don’t want to see another gun ban because I know they don’t work. I’d rather see the root causes of violence addressed. If you address poverty, unemployment, homelessness, and mental illness with robust social programs and treat them as the systemic public health issues that they are, bans are unnecessary because crime will be obsolete.

Banning guns with a law, enforced by police to whom the law does not apply, won’t stop gun violence; it will further entrench the police state.

If simply having guns lead to gun violence, then other countries with higher rates of gun ownership than the US would have the same problems with gun violence.

Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Your first few sentences are correct. Mental health needs to be top priority. Bullying inschools needs to be handled differently. Your never going to stop gun violence 100% but if you can stop 95% of it, you take that as a win.

Bro what the fuck are you talking about?

This is a real video you can see with your own eyes of rioters trying to loot a small business.

This isn’t some hypothetical argument on Reddit like you’re used to, it’s some real that actually happened.

Tbh the amount of bystanders astounds me, like I cannot imagine being there, seeing that guy flying kick someone with their back turned and not immediately grabbing and pummeling him.

This is coming from someone who doesnt think rioting as protest is wrong–but it’s really obvious why the videogame store is being looted/vandalized instead of things that actually matter.

I find it amusing that there’s a lot of sympathetic comments on this post putting a face on the consequences of these riots but on the other post showing a police car in a crowd all the comments were proud of the rioters.

I’m all for showing numbers and voicing our concerns but we’re just punching sideways when there’s a riot. I find it sad that people here on Lemmy side with the rioters

I side with the rioters because rioting creates a capital cost that can not be ignored. Peaceful protests can be ignored and are ignored. Smash windows and burn buildings. After the riot capital has to respond. It’s juvenile to suggest political change can happen with none of the advocates harmed. That’s a fantasy. Revolutions are messy–that is the reality. I’d rather advocate and be in a messy revolution than peacefully protest as capital subjugates labour into a poverty state. Assassinate your landlord and every real-estate agent.

Yes, peaceful protests are easy to ignore. But surely there is a balance between “don’t break anything” and “destroy a working class business”.

Maybe destroy public property (the property of those that need to make the change) or the property of the ultra rich (the property of those that made the change necessary).

It’s like arguing that a kid who gets bullied is justified in responding violently, but instead of lashing out at a staff member or the bully, they’re beating up band kids

No there is not. Peaceful protests are not easy to ignore they are ignored. That’s historical fact. To protest is to intimidate and produce fear of overwhelming violence. A peaceful protest is nonsensical and such a thing has become not a protest but a farce or a form of entertainment–no wonder the Americans love such things!

Protest-leaders will be directing violence to where they think it will be most effective, but these are chaotic environments and self-harm is always a result. The goal is to minimize that, not eliminate it, because it can not be done. It is collateral.

I’m the type that doesn’t consider burning down the city I live in and destroying public property is the path to progress. France’s economy is already strained and guess who’ll have to pay to rebuild everything? Hint: It’s not the elites

It might be cathartic to burn down your house because you don’t like your landlord but it doesn’t solve anything
