Wtf are you talking about? Free Palestine protesters are still actively organizing their communities and providing support where they can. The same groups are literally still staging actions and fighting for the freedom, liberatation, and survival of Palestinian people at home and abroad. Who do you think you’re clowning on with this meme? The people fighting against genocide didnt just give up because we have a new worse president.

The people “fighting against genocide” in exactly one place in the world and no others played a not insignificant role in why we have a new worse president in the first place.

When there are exactly two options before you, and one of them will be selected, and neither one is perfect, and you spend all your effort bitching about the least bad choice, you’re helping get the most bad choice selected.

          Good work.

          • Despite what you may have been led to believe, anti-genocide groups have never spent “all their effort” on electoral politics. You’re choosing to spend your time right now bitching about those fighting oppression rather than joining the fight.

            Good work.

In addition to the other replies, there’s also quite a large difference between the actions of a foreign government doing something our current government already considers human rights abuse and the actions of a foreign government defended by our own, carried out with weapons manufactured and supplied by us, and where any criticism or protest of said support is categorized by nearly every politician as either antisemitism or tacit support of republican extremism. Both are genocide, but trying to protest the actions of the Chinese government as a US citizen in the US is pretty pointless, it’s better to focus efforts where it has a more direct impact. You don’t need to evenly split your attention between every single issue in order to be allowed to talk about any of them.

Don’t worry, their efforts here have not only made sure THAT genocide keeps going, and the Palestine one gets worse, but also the new Axis powers now have America in their pocket. So we will get to have even more genocides for them to protest from prison. Good job everyone!!

With that kind of “support”, why have enemies? The Free Palestine movement is doing their opposition’s work far better than they could. Helping along the movement’s self-defeating strategy could be their best move: with a few more antagonistic governments, the Palestinian cause will be over in no time.

Literally today. Just because you don’t give a shit about Palestine and are ignoring their struggle, doesn’t suddenly make it stop. The same groups who were protesting the genocide when it was happening under Biden are still out there protesting.

I can’t help but feel like the Dems end goal with this kinda bullshit is to try and manufacture this idea that leftist outrage over Gaza is entirely fabricated. We couldn’t really care about brown people, we must have made up a bunch of nasty lies to make Kamala Harris look bad! It’s really self-telling that they can’t imagine genocide would be a bridge too far.

Pretty much no one thought he’d be better, more like not worse in a meaningful way. Obviously saying the US is going to turn Gaza into a resort is worse than not saying that, but that distinction is pretty unimportant to everyone who would be killed or driven out under a democratic president anyway. The end goal has always been to fully settle Palestine, what exact form that takes or whether the US funds it with a smile or a frown doesn’t change that.

Worse in general or just in regard to Palestine? Obviously he’s so much worse in general, which is why I did vote for Harris. But specifically on the issue of Palestine no matter what the genocide wasn’t stopping, the Biden admin made it pretty clear there wasn’t actually a red line Israel could cross that would end the supply of weapons, considering every one they did make was blown past with no consequences. And Harris repeatedly signified that wouldn’t have changed.

But it’s also not productive to try and assign blame to people who didn’t vote, or voted 3rd party, though. The problem isn’t that people didn’t want to vote for the conservative party instead of the fascist party, its that we only had those 2 options to pick from. Obviously one of them was less harmful overall, but that doesn’t make them meaningfully better for Palestine, or even a good/appealing choice. Our entire political system was built to represent slaveowners and rich white men, and that’s so deeply ingrained into every aspect of its design that there’s no way to move away from those roots from within the system. Even if Trump lost this time, what’s stopping him from running again? Or the next version of him? Or what about the continued corporate capture of the government and both parties? None of those can just be voted away, and placing responsibility for fixing things entirely on voting just wastes time that would be better spent organizing while they continue to fester and grow.

We correctly thought Trump would be worse in regard to Palestine, e.g. with things like supporting forced removal/ethnic cleansing like he did yesterday.

Like I said, coming out and saying he supports the forced removal of Palestinians is awful, and neither Biden or Harris would have done that obviously. It seems pretty obvious neither of them are actually happy with Israel. But whether the US president is happy about it or not, lsraels end goal is and always has been ethnic cleansing either way. So while it is worse to express support for that goal than to express disapproval, as long as the US keeps up the supply of weapons - which we will almost assuredly do no matter what, Trump or otherwise - then to all the people being ethnically cleansed it doesn’t mean anything. The Biden administration has been expressing support for this since at least 2023, via its actions rather than words. That’s what people mean by Trump not being meaningfully worse for Palestine. Not that he isn’t worse than Biden or Harris, but that the ways in which he is worse on this specific issue don’t matter to the people who are actively the targets of the genocide. If you’re being bombed by US funded weapons then who gives a shit what the person approving those weapons says about it, they sent them either way.

It’s still happening, just not getting anywhere close to the level of coverage it was during the election. Because back in October the big US media companies were trying to paint Biden, Harris, Walz, and the entire Democrat party as being much worse than Trump would be for Palestine. I didn’t see much coverage of Trump’s relationship with Netanhyahu or looking back at what happened in 2017-2020 back the either.

Now that Trump has won there’s no point in stoking any unrest. He’s instead cracking down on protests and cancelling the visas of foreign students who are caught protesting.

They didn’t go anywhere, but the media now doesn’t need to paint the current admin as “the bad guys” by highlighting the protest groups, so they are not getting the same amount of screen time.

Now the playbook is to make it look like everyone agrees with the governments stance, so quash the protests, ignore their efforts, arrest the instigators.

This is most of it. And there’s obviously some sock puppet stuff too, but the Lemmy community is so small they probably never targeted it. But mostly it’s because getting coalitions to infight has always benefited the people who took power a few weeks ago. Now they have nothing more to gain by promoting it and everything to lose by making people think it’s still a problem. So…

I also wish more culpability was on them.

I understand that we want local action to urge changes. But honestly, if we stopped giving them weapons, I’m fairly sure another far eviler world superpower would snatch up the chance for a new ally.

Israel had its September 11 moments, and being a more vulnerable nation, turned it into an outlet of rage. More can be done by convincing Israelis this approach harms more than helps them, even creating new terrorists, rather than just washing America’s hands of it while the killing continues.

where did the free Palestine protestors go

Well a bunch of them got expelled, deported, blacklisted, arrested, and more. Many of their organizations were forcibly disbanded, and the campuses where they were active have been thoroughly militarized.

    • I haven’t seen a single group of protesters on my daily like i used to before the election and I’m in Canada. People have short attention spans and move on, just ask Ukraine who was forgotten by non Ukrainians as soon as the next one came up. In Canada we’re on to the fuck American products movement. People don’t actually care as much as they yell out. Commenting on Reddit and Lemmy is about all they do now.
