Meh, imo compared to most of Star Trek or Babylon 5 it was kinda mid (even Star Wars - The Clone War was better). Just basically American mil-prop but in space.

Let me remind you of the original premise: A conspiracy theorist nutjob eccentric professor (thinks aliens build the pyramids, but is somehow still allowed to lecture at an university) is hired by the military to help them explore an unknown world where they have to save uncivilised savages helpless slaves (using, you’ve guessed it: guns) from an evil dictator all powerfull god (who still needs slaves tho).

The more I think about it, it’s not even mid, it’s crap. It has no wonder for what’s beyond the stars, just a constant psychotic fear of anything that could even remotely be considered a danger to America Earth. And the only solution to it is shoot at it.

If you watch too many episodes at once you realize they all end in shootouts, and then you feel sad.

The big sci fi win in stargate is how highly they rated internal consistency and having a scientific basis where possible. Apparently that was mostly because the actress playing Carter absolutely refused to tell bullshit gobbledegook and forced the writers to do it properly.

It’s subtle, and not always perfectly followed, but if you take the episode where they gate to the black hole, they have significant screen time justifying why the time dilation is so strong when the gravitational effects are so weak. It shouldn’t work that way and they acknowledge that explicitly, but obviously they wanted a fun time dilation story so they call it out and explain it as an unexpected side effect of the gate wormhole. So sure, they sometimes make science do what they need it to do for the story, but they try hard to justify it.

Star Trek meanwhile barely follows its own rules most of the time, let alone actually acknowledging real physics

Now Rodney who fired up that unstable energy chamber again after it had already fried one guy on the other hand…

That looks kinda like the guy who played Ragnar in “Vikings.”

(cautiously checks for weird things like too many fingers, armor features that make nonsense, or other visual anomalies before cautiously asking…)

      What’s this from?

      It looks pretty rad.

Watching the two on the left go from hardnosed atheist commandos to saying “Praise Sol” with conviction, what a wild fucking trip of a show.

It’s called Raised By Wolves. It was on HBO Max before Zaslov took over. He scrapped it completely and pulled it off the platform. I think it’s on one of those free ad-supported channels now.

The show is produced by Ridley Scott and his production company Scott Free Productions .

It’s quite hard to describe. At its core, it’s a sci-fi series focused on a couple of androids who are sent to raise human kids on another planet when Earth is destroyed by a religious war.

Beyond that, it’s like someone took LSD before writing the weirdest sci-fi shit they could think of. I mean like:

          Tap for spoiler

androids giving birth to flying snakes, acid aliens storing babies in their chest cavity, and people turning into trees

I don’t even know how to describe it without spoilers because it’s so wild. I absolutely loved it.

As someone who did watch it on acid, fully agreed. I had to rewatch it sober because I thought the whole show had been a fever dream. It was even trippier sober.

Okay I think I might have watched the first episode or I watch at least the preview for it and it was one of those shows that I wanted to watch but I’ve got so many that it just hasn’t gone to that point yet. Guess I’m going to have to dig that out here soon.

Do give it a watch but don’t rush. They cancelled the show before ending it so it’s very unsatisfying.

I had watched the first half of the first episode and then got called away for something and didnt go back until about a year later when people recommended it. I restarted the episode and almost stopped again but then the ending just went off the rails and I got much more interested

I liked the first 80% of the first season, and stopped watching halfway into S02E01. Is it worth continuing? Do we get any answers? Are they satisfying?

No. The show is cancelled before they wrap up anything.

Personally, I’d still watch it anyway because the show is so goddamn weird you can’t find anything like it anywhere else.

For anyone reading who hasn’t seen it, I would describe it as the most metal (🤘) show I’ve ever seen.

ALright, thanks for the recommendation :) And yeah, “weird” and “metal” are good descriptions. Additionally, the backstory we got in S1 was definitely “fire”.

I thought these were Whitecloaks from WoT at first and then my dumbass was like “no, Whitecloaks have golden sunbursts on the chest of their uniforms, not red. Wait, what about The Hand Of the Light? No, that’s crimson shepherd’s crooks, not sunbursts”

That continued for a while before I noticed their fucking guns
