Hello, lurker from ye olde sneerclubbe. So glad to see this place continue! Huge source of comfort when I broke with the rat community after realising how crazy cultish they are—thanks sneeple ✨️

Hi. I’m new to Sneer Club. Only realized what the Reddit community was about a few days ago. I never visited the Less Wrong site back in its era of high activity. I had a friend who told me about it, the Harry Potter fanfic, and I guess the Sequences, but it all seemed like a massively low return on time investment, and the self-important mission to save humanity from Unfriendly AI also sounded kooky and like some kind of self-perpetuating bullshit.

(Aside: As for Slate Star Codex, I probably never read a single piece all the way through. The guy just meanders incessantly, and to this day, I’m amazed any readers could keep doing that to themselves.)

This all brings me some sadness, as I deeply value critical thinking and rationalism (Who tells themselves that they don’t?), and as annoying as that community was, and their diaspora in the effective altruist milieu is today, given that the world seems to be ever more irrational, rationalism-minded people and movements, IMO, are dearly needed.

Lately though I’ve been fascinated by how for all the skills that community worked to instill itself with, it didn’t wind up insulating itself from imploding into its own irrationalism.

Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to join this community and to all the people that put it together and maintain it.

Yudkowsky is Dr. Lucas Elliot from the 1990s MTV cartoon The Head.

Hi, and thanks for making this! Glad to continue sneering.

P.S. “TREACLES” is pretty clever, Emile Torres and Timnit Gebru should have gone with that instead of keeping it in chronological order.

Hello. I’ve been a lurker in SneerClub for a year or so.

I’ve never been either a Yudkowsky-style rationalist or worked in the IT industry, but my whole life has been weirdly parallel to this sort of thing. And now that world has nurtured some of the worst A-list villainy of our times.

Yays. I’m still trying to work out precisely how deep the rot goes.

Favourite personal hate sinks include Scott Alexander, Richard Hanania, Robin Hanson, Steven Pinker, Peter Thiel, Curtis Yarvin, and the thing that bought Twitter. I have a bad feeling these people are building an intellectual infrastructure for fascism more functional than anything the fascists could manage themselves.

Lurker. SC helped ensure I didn’t fully enter the rabbithole of LW/rationalists/SSC, which is good because literally just the relatively short exposure I had to their nonsense has had lasting effects on me. So yea.

be here or be sneer, i guess

i sort of depend on this community to not go insane working in tech, so i’m happy it’s continuing

same! sneerclub is like a beacon of sanity when all your coworkers are doing the “ai apocalypse is here when I hook gpt up to a good enough robot” bit and slack won’t stop blowing up

I really like sneering at hn posts and I always wished techtakes had more traffic. I’m not sure how to swing it from a community growth standpoint (at least til we federate) but there’s always room for more sneer communities here
