OS: CachyOS GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Board: MPG B550 GAMING PLUS CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X (16) @ 4.43 GHz Memory: 31.26 GiB
i try to keep it short: i have issues with some games (like the witcher 3) and often hear that its an issue with nvidia drivers etc…
So my question is: would a switch / small upgrade to a AMD Radeon 6800 be worth it?
I dont know what CachyOS is… but if you’re willing to try hardware changing, why not try an OS change first?
Specifically, a change to a gaming focused linux distro (like Nobara, or Bazzite), that comes with a nvidia specific iso?
See if that solves your issue before dropping money on a new card.
CachyOS is gaming focused though, their GUI has a button to install their gaming meta package. they also package their own Proton which shows up in Steam as a compatibility option.
cyberpunk at least seems to run noticeably better for me on CachyOS than it did on Win11, on exactly the same hardware (5800x3d, rtx 4080)
Ah, well, I don’t know then. Sorry, like I said, I know nothing about CachyOS… but it wouldnt hurt to try, regardless, since switching from nvidia to amd would basically be easiest with a reformat anyway.
Soooo after finishing my popcorn and reading the funny “discussion” between you and captain gatekeeper, here is my real reply.
https://cachyos.org/ its a arch based distro which was recommend by many for gaming. Usually I am a “standard arch” fan but for my living room I wanted a distro wich does not give me so much headache.
I am not used with fedora based distros and also usually I am not a friend of distro hopping, especially when i dont really finished my installation scripts so a new distro would also a pain in the ass to configure 😄
To be honest I think i need to admit that i am ready for an upgrade in my hardware and also search for a reason to buy a NRW GPU, but still wanna consider my options.
Out of curiosity, how hard is the switch to a fedora based Linux if I am usually used to use arch or Debian based distros?
I hesitate to make any reply on the subject of CachyOS for fear of drawing more ire in my direction… so I’ll say thanks for the info and leave it at that :D

Debian/Ubuntu based distros is where I started before jumping on board with the Fedora based Nobara distro.
I can honestly say it wasnt that hard at all. The biggest issue was learning to type dnf instead of apt when installing software from terminal, Which is hardly an issue at all… so it being my biggest issue highlights the ease of it to me, being a random idiot who doesnt have IT/Sysadmin level experience with linux.
I hope at least you know what Hanna Montana Linux is 😝
Still thanks for the input :) I think i stay on arch /Debian based distros, because if I switch my living room PC to fedora I would have 3 different systems to manage ^^
And ignore the other person. There are always weird people out there who think everybody has to know everything they know…
Only because I’ve seen the Michael MJD video about it, lol.
Don’t blame you for stayong on Cachy, Its what your comfortable with. Was just tryin to offer something that had a chance of helping without having to buy a card at such insane prices thanks to ram and AI bullshit.
and yeah, I know, but I legitimately am concerned for him. People like that end up killing loved ones if they don’t get help.
You know Nobara & Bazzite but you never heard of the CachyOS?.. Tell me you’re a troll without telling me you’re one.
How dare I suggest someone try save some money by trying a free option first, and not have the full and intimate knowledge of everything in existence.
I shall submit myself to 50 lashings for the egregious sin of not knowing your favorite distro. For give me, lord, for I have sinned most vile.
Well how hope you really do it…
To have the audacity to give me a nice advice without knowing every distro ever. Did you even used Hannah Montana Linux?
50 lashes will be both enough, you gonna use win 11 for two days and I hope you learn from that to not be a nice person on the internet without knowing if there is a new distro!
Fuck off!!! You don’t give suggestion you basically lie to people that you don’t know what CachyOS distro is. You could have clearly said what you wanted but you chose to be an asshole and you don’t get to play the victim card here cunt!
Respectfully, You need to find a good therapist and talk your rage issues out with them, before you snap and do something terrible to a loved one. Please. For your sake, and those around you.
Kindly you need to fuck off with that bullshit and stop lying to people about you not knowing what CachyOS Linux distro is. I don’t know what kind of mental masturbation you do with this kind of bullshit but, you’re not convincing anyone.
If believing I’m lying gets you to go talk to a professional, then sure, I’m lying. I totally know everything about whatever it is.
Ahahaha… Whatever floats your mental masturbation boat.
CachyOS the top distro on distrowatch.com right now.
I’ve switched from 3090 to the XTX few months back because of a really weird and unique bugs in one of my games (but otherwise it worked alright) and for few months had a lot more problems then I had with nvidia, especially with suspend but sometimes it would just crash (Plasma).
I did also switch to Plasma/Wayland with the upgrade so who knows but few kernels/mesa versions back were really bad, it works nicely now though [Arch]
I switched back to x11 because KDE always crashed. Forgot to mention that problem.
i switched from rtx 2060 to 5700 xt just a few weeks ago, and a bunch of things run well that barely could before. i was mostly concerned with the forza horizons, they run perfectly now
however there are some issues, mplayer/mpv shows a blue screen on most output drivers, and steamvr just crashes, so there are things to figure out (suggestions are welcome)
(btw i played w3 for a bit before on nvidia, and i had no issues, just to complicate things)
I think the only sane thing i would do is to reinstall the distro… But maybe you should open a new thread? People are very nice here and I bet somebody can help you with a better solution than me :3
Here’s the direct comparison:

Would it be worth it?
If you’re in the US, looking at US prices (~$520), hellllllll no.
You can get a 9070 (non xt), for almost the same price (~$550), and thats a much, much better GPU, much more performance per dollar.
https://www.hardwaredb.net/radeon-rx-9070-vs-radeon-rx-6800
Or, you could get a 9060 XT (16 GB) for half about half the price (~$270), and still have a probably overall better card in most situations.
https://www.hardwaredb.net/radeon-rx-9060-xt-vs-radeon-rx-6800
And yes, a 9060 XT (16 GB) beats a 3070.

Double the VRAM, near half the cost, roughly 20% more gigapixel throughout.
Yeah, older model GPUs, the used market, at least in the US?
Pricing is delusional right now.
Apparently nobody got the memo that new, current AMD GPUs, have actually fallen in price a good deal in the last 6 months.
Used in Europe around 200-250€ Forgot to mention that i would buy a used and sell mine.
Also, I hoped for a easy fix, instead of troubleshooting :D
Edit: after reading your post a second time i have to say the following: dammit the world needs more people like you thank you, thank you thank you!!!
I gonna buy the radeon 9060 xt and sell my old one. Nice cheap upgrade :3
excellent choice. it’s a fantastic card.
AMD really did well with the 9000 series, including FSR4. and they are finally at parity with Nvidia when it comes to hardware encoding for streaming.
Hey, no problem!
Just make A B S O L U T E L Y sure that you get a 16 GB version of the 9060 XT.
AMD did a shitty thing, and released two versions of the 9060XT, one with 8 GB VRAM, one with 16 GB VRAM… but they often have very similar, if not identical names on the packaging, and on online store listings.
Double, Triple, Quadruple check that your 9060 XT is the 16 GB version… don’t get scammed!
But uh yeah, just generally speaking, if you’re already running CachyOS, and you’re fully into Linux Gaming…
AMD is the way to go, they are way way way more open with their drivers than Nvidia, and this just generally results in things working more smoothly.
Also, you could look into OptiScaler, the thing that DeckyFrameGen uses on Steam Decks… basically, there is a whole collections of mods that make it so you can run DLSS on an AMD card, or FSR on an Nvidia card, for a good deal of games… and that works through Proton.
Yeah, an AMD card is probably not gonna run DLSS as well as it runs FSR… but, if you want to try those options, you can.
Its a bit of a procedure to follow though, maybe comparable to doing ENB injection mods back in the day, its a bit more involved than a typical mod that just alters some content in the game.
If you’re playing Witcher 3 with the RTX on and the next-gen update then it’s probably your VRAM limiting you.
The witcher was just an example. I got a lot of crashes in KDE plasma, for that reason I switched to back to xfce.
I’ve had no issues with nVidia GPU and TW3, running it with protonGE 9.26. Try that first if you haven’t already
The witcher was just an example, hoped for an easy fix for example the dead space female had some stutters too. But i think i gonna check the configs and post them wehen I am back in town
Understood. I mentioned TW3 because I found it to be very anal about Proton versions, but I’ve never had any problems that could be attributed to nVidia with any games I’ve played. I ran the official, close-source drivers

I play games (resource intensive and on max settings) on a 7800 and they all run just fine with Linux Mint.
