The only belief that’s been shattered mildly bruised is that he is in the in-group, and that by association his wife is too. But it’s a safe bet that he still believes himself to be in the in-group.

Exactly. You vote for the Leopards Eating Peoples’ Faces Party because you want to watch the leopards eating someone’s face. You just never believe it will be your face.

“Why did you vote for him?” a member of Congress asked.

“Because I was an idiot,” the veteran replied.

This was him speaking to congress, seems he learned.

Having grown up in the southern US, it can be indoctrinating. Especially in religious areas of which he is a part. Am I going to defend him? No, he made his choices. Am I happy he’s willing to go speak in front of congress? Yes.

Evangelical Christian people were lied to, if you really want to know the truth. And that’s exactly what happened.

Evangelical Christians are easy to lie to, if you want to know the truth, because they disdain intelligence, preferring their world in which they cosplay magic in fairyland 24/7 without even a tiny hint of self-awareness (because they have none). Given the same choice he would do it again, because he’s too cost-sunk in his dumbass roleplaying to do anything different.

Evangelical Christians just want to hear that they’re going to be rewarded for their suffering. Catholics as well. The Rapture, Heaven, Honoring the Son of God…

It’s a whole group of miserable people who are desperate for affirmation that their misery has meaning. Then they groom their children into miserable lives, and pressure strangers into being miserable as well. It’s incredibly sad.

“It is one thing to just not deliver,” she said. “But to act in the way that he has, which is so dehumanizing, so cruel… this is why we are seeing the beginnings of real cracks with this president and his base.”

The beginnings of real cracks? WTF? He doesn’t need you any more! You elected him already. Why would he possibly care? If he’s president beyond the end of this term, it won’t be because a free, fair and legal election took place! Why would he fucking care one ounce of a fart what you, a powerless nonentity, think of him? There’s nothing you can offer him in the future. He only ever cares what you can do for him. He has never cared what he can do for you. Ever.

Conservatives broadly fine care about suffering and hardship unless it directly and specifically affects them. Even then it doesn’t always sink in, either.

We’ve got a family of psychopaths loving below us, from some Eastern European country. They’ll bang on their ceiling if we move around after 9 pm. He tried to actually prohibit it, but I told him no, not politely. My landlord seems to hate them, too. They were trying to get his attention on the sidewalk a while back, and he barked at them “I told you that I don’t want to hear from you unless your place is on fire!” He likes us, though.

But ever since Trump took office again, and ICE started rounding people up, these people have been SILENT. No banging on the ceiling , no dirty looks, no monopolizing the courtyard, etc.

I’m pretty sure they’re just flying under the radar, knowing that we could make their lives miserable with one phone call. I wouldn’t do it, but if the tables were turned, I have no doubt that they would dime us out in a heartbeat.

It just isn’t real until it affects them personally

      Lacking empathy ?

“In my work with the defendants (at the Nuremberg Trials 1945-1949) I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think 1 have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men.Evil. I think. is the absence of empathy.

I really can’t sufficiently express how frustrating it was to say this as I watched my culture move away from empathy and to be dismissed as alarmist at best and with mockery more commonly. I wish now as then that I knew a way to convince people to display empathy and act in good faith

I feel the same. I dont see a path forward without a huge catalyzing event (which is almost certainly not going to involve puppies and rainbows).

It took the right wing 50 years of dedicated, hard work to align all the stars and get their men into the right offices all at the same time in order to dismantle so much of our government. Without a huge catalyst, I fear its going to take the left 50 years to swing things back the other way. We might have to live through decades of shit like Iran, North Korea, or Russia before it swings back the other way.

If it makes it any better in my experience the average Trump vote is pretty fucken stupid. Use my grandmother for example where whenever I have any trouble dissembling a piece of tech around her her first response is to suggest the sawzaw. Point is they ain’t very bright and a lot of them legit don’t know about how bad he is due to information and propaganda bubbles.

Man, got really confused here for a second reading this. Probably perfectly understandable for a native English speaker though and I learned a few new things; sawzaw = Sawzall = reciprocating saw and dissembling being an actual word.
