I think it was more the fact that Bowie knew all the dealers in LA and would have a mountain of whatever kind of drugs he wanted in front of him in less than five minutes if he had a craving there but he didn’t have that kind of connect in Berlin
I would call cocain and crack the worst of them all for society. All Addicts I knew, who totally lost controll about their consume & life, always called out Cocain as pure evil. So for example, they used other drugs, even heroine, to control the cocaine indused crave for more cocaine. Even before they were addicts
And under the influence of cocaine they did a lot of evil stuff, like manic violence against people. With heroine they “just” lay around.

Bowie’s problems at the time were with cocaine, which LA was awash in. West Berlin was more a heroin town.

I get where you’re going with this. That said, the idea of using heroin as harm reduction for cocaine abuse is just wild to me.
Yeah, seems like a really stupid idea. But as far as I know it even has its own name “speedball”
Heroin was Iggy’s drug of choice though.
