No they think Catholics are not Christian. I really have no idea why he converted to Catholicism other than he is willing to change his face to get what he wants.
Historically Catholics would follow the opinion of Rome (the pope) but he is trying to create an “American Catholic” opinion for them to follow instead. Global religions are a risk to any authoritative government. They can’t control their influence as easily.
