I clicked this for a justice boner, people that park in front of hydrants are selfish pricks, but the whole time I’m thinking “it would have been easier and faster to just go over the hood, or even under the front.” Every second counts and he wasted time breaking the windows and putting the hose through. It even looks like the hose has to bend more this way, I don’t know it that is enough to affect the flow rate, but it can’t help. And in the absence of a red curb (at least I don’t see one) it’s not unreasonable to think the area between the posts is the no parking area, and it looks like they’re outside of it. If they’re in it they’re barely in it. If I had to park that close, I would find another spot, but if I saw someone doing this I wouldn’t think as poorly of them as I would your average selfish parker.
I park legally but that firefighter used the illegal parking as an excuse to deliberately delay aid to an emergency. The firefighter and the driver are both shitheads.

this happens all the time. I saw it in the 90s doing ride-alongs with med-star (ambulance company). it’s gonna dump a lot of water into the vehicle, too, because hoses get use, worn and leak. And every time I see it I feel a little bit of joy in my heart because fuck you, stop blocking hydrants you ghouls.

Smashing out the side windows to bend the hose more is a really bad look for these firefighters. They should have smashed the windshield and rear window for a straighter path to demonstrate their ability to apply logic over blatant aggression. If mapping out the most efficient route before smashing windows is too taxing, then they should smash all the windows to give immediate access to any arrangement; this would demonstrate efficiency and effectiveness.
Also, tossing those trash bags off to the side like that could have hit a bystander, further inflating their aggressive appearance. Furthermore, their new placement is a tripping hazard. Those should have been stored safely inside the car.

What you see there is not tempered glass. That is laminated glass. This is clearly evident in the video.
He wasn’t the only one doing things and in no way slowed down the whole procedure. There are many steps involved in getting water going and connecting the hose is merely one step. They also don’t need the hose from a hydrant hooked up to spray what’s already in the tank unless they showed up empty.
The amount of water in a tank is a fraction of what is needed to tackle a major fire. You’ve got about 3 minutes worth with a branch open at full flow.
Because of that limitation, you also aren’t going to start an internal attack until you have a reticulated supply established, since running out of water while inside a building is a potential death sentence.
If I were in the same position I would have simply run my feeder run around or over the car rather than messing about like this guy.

Of course they can be bent. Also how fucking slow are they working. We measure this in seconds, not minutes. The tank in the engine is limited and ideally you try to run multiple hoses at once. And sneakers and shorts? Firefighters in the US are weird.
He wasted about two minutes in an emergency to do this. The guy illegally parked there, let the law enforcement handle it and do your job. He could have hooked it up and went literally any direction he wanted to without potentially damaging the hose on broken glass and wasting time doing so.

Anything within a certain distance of a fire hydrant is a no parking zone. I’m not sure if this differs at all in distance by jurisdiction (since every state has separate licensing). There are sometimes also signs on poles that explicitly say this.

That’ll depend on where you live. Without painted curbs I’d rely on the physical indicators. In this case the bollards in front of it. Car is outside the shown limits so I’m guessing this is legally parked and they just wanted a video.
Absolutely 100% not legally parked. Whether curbs are marked or not, you can’t park that close to a hydrant. 15ft is usually the standard minimum across the US.

And there should still be indicators even if the rule is 15 feet. Someone from another state or country might not know, but a yellow line is a very clear indication.

I’ve seen a car being towed/dragged out of an alley it was double parked in, so the fire brigade could gain access. They did NOT care how damaged it was in the process.
That seems like a legitimate reason to do so. There seemed to be absolutely no reason to do this in this specific situation though as it didn’t accomplish anything and actually made the angle of the hose much worse than it would have been using literally any other solution.
They did this in the movie Backdraft. Saw it as a kid in theaters. Ask my step dad about it, and he said damn straight you park in front of hydrate then they swill do this.
