What's the deal with using phonetic symbols here on Lemmy?

I’ve seen a few users who use phonetic symbols or something alike in their posts and comments. What’s the point?

I have that problem when people use “it’s” when it should be “its” and vice versa. Unfortunately blocking those would leave me with a Lemmy of maybe half a dozen users.
